“Highfield Park”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Stayed here on a Sunday night to avoid M25 Monday morning madness and will do so again to save virtually 2 hours on my travel time. Cannot complain because it was a special £29 deal but will do anyway. Friendly staff, lovely room but here comes the but, but from about 6.00am all hell broke loose. I have never stayed in a hotel with such paper thin walls or possibly such a bunch of ham-fisted, clod-hopping guests. They may have been part of a group but there was an hour of every possible toilet being flushed, showers run, baths being drained, doors being slammed and suit-cases being dropped. As I said will definitely stay here again but next time I will definitely bring the ear defenders with me.

Room Tip: Bring ear defenders!

Thank you very much for posting this review and your nice comments about our staff and your room. I would be most grateful if you could contact me at the hotel and advise the date you stayed in order that we can look into the early morning noise as we cannot find record in our files of any large groups vacating early on a Monday morning recently that may have made the noise mentioned and it has not been drawn to our attention by any other guests. Many thanks for your time.

“A good wedding venue but looking pretty ropey”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We went to a wedding here and stayed the night; it's a nice venue with stunning views but it's in great need of a renovation. The carpets are old, stained and worn, and walls are peeling and marked, there is a very musty smell everywhere, and the general decorative finish is of a low standard.
The rooms are very ropey; the shower was small and mildewy and the door had been replaced with a shower curtain that didn't fit so the water went all over the floor. The quilt on the bed wasn't very nice, the decorative cushions were dirty and stained, there were no toiletries apart from a green hand soap and little shampoo. They left the towels for the room on the floor outside (ick) and the general cleanliness of the room was sub-standard. The decor was quite tacky; there's no excuse for this in this sort of venue - they would benefit from a visit by the Hotel Inspector!
The breakfast the following morning was good; plenty to choose from but overall I would say the room was not worth £75 - and I thought that was a good price before I got there!

Thank you for your review. Could I please ask you to contact me at the hotel to advise which bedroom you were in that you are referring to as we have no record of this feedback. The main house wedding venue is fresh & modern & we have not had any complaints of worn carpets, peeling walls or a musty smell within it. In our Fir Tree Court accommodation building (formerly known as Stable Court), we do still have a small number of bedrooms awaiting refurbishment but we are not aware of any that fulfill all the comments made on this review and would very much appreciate being made aware of which room or area this guest is referring to in order that we can rectify. Thank you.

“Nice for wedding but not a great hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

We stayed a night here as we were attending a wedding (which was lovely).
However, the hotel accomodation really is not great. Rooms were extremely hot and heating appeared to have no controls. Windows would not open either.
Level of overall cleanliness in bedrooms left something to be desired - carpets need a good clean. No decaff coffee sachets on tea trays, and cups not washed up properly since previous guests.
Breakfast plates were stone cold as was much of the food at the buffet.
Although there are nice views, you would need to use your car to get anywhere else from here.
Have the staff had any training in customer relations? Not exactly rude, but some lacked inter-personal skills I feel.
Not what we would expect from DeVere, although - as I stated already - it is a nice wedding venue.

Room Tip: Ask for main building and windows which open.

We are very glad you enjoyed the wedding here at Highfield Park. Thank you for the comments you have made that help us to look into the overall guest experience. Carpets are all deep cleaned throughout the year when the business in house allows which recently took place over the Christmas to New Year period. The bedroom windows do open and we are sorry you experienced problems with this, our Duty Manager log does not note anyone advising us of such a problem. The general cleanliness comments have been passed on to the Housekeeping Supervisor to ensure they do not reoccur. All staff have training on customer service and we usually receive very complimentary feedback on their dedication and enthusiasm so if you have any specific things you would like to address please contact me directly at Highfield Park. Thank you again for your comments as these help us ensure future customer satisfaction.

“Acceptable for Money Paid!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

After reading previous reviews, I was worried about what to expect, however the stay was not as bad as I was expecting. I do feel if we had of paid more money, then I would not of been as happy about the stay, we booked via De Vere’s website on an advance purchase room only rate which was cheaper than a Budget hotel. However on check –in we were told we had not paid, although the offer stated it was to be paid at the time of booking, after querying this, the receptionist asked us to check if the payment had been taken and to deal with it on check out.

Also during check in we were told there was a wedding on and that there would be no food available, we did not mind and went to find somewhere else to eat but it is a little inconvenient after a very long drive.

We had 2 rooms booked, both in the stable block, which is only a minutes’ walk from the main hotel so was not that far as others make it out to be, also we were able to park right outside the stable block so the car was close. I was a little frustrated as we had booked 2 rooms together at the beginning of October, but found our rooms at the opposite ends of the building. We asked reception if there were any closer rooms and were told no as the bride had picked all the other rooms for her guests, however the receptionist did offer us another room in the end, though this room was so small, the bed was up against the wall and the desk was blocking the bottom of the bed, the room would have been a nice room if it was single occupancy, but it was not big enough for 2 people, therefore we declined this room and stayed at opposite ends of the stable block. The rooms we stayed in were a nice size for a couple, and adequate for a short stay.
Although within both of the rooms there was only one set of towels when we arrived and for one of the rooms there was only one set of towels the 2nd day – although after phoning reception to ask for more towels this was rectified.

On check out we did question why the money had not been taken in advance and the receptionist apologised and said it must have slipped through the net – which was fine and after checking our statement, it had not already been taken and agreed to pay - I must say that it could have extremely embarrassing if we did not have the money available - expecting to have paid the money in October when the booking was made and finding out in December - just before Christmas you have not! It has made me ensure I will double check that the payment has be taken on any future bookings that are pre-paid.

We would stay here aging, but would not pay any more money for those rooms, and expect a better service as it is a De Vere.

Room Tip: If booking states pre-paid – double check.

Thank you very much for your review and for clarifying how close Stable Court really is to the main house!

We would like to apologise for the inconvenience experienced with the booking you made 2 months in advance and would like to clarify our usual procedure. Whenever we have a wedding, if there are bedrooms available on freesale these are usually only within one month prior to the date when all guests have booked their requirements and we always state the bedrooms will be in Stable Court and there is no bar or evening food available, we can never guarantee the location within Stable Court of the bedrooms until the bridal party have allocated all their rooms as they have priority on their wedding day. In this instance, the wedding held on 3rd December was actually only booked a few weeks in advance therefore when you booked which was earlier than this, we did not have our messages about food and beverage live as they did not apply at that time. We do apologise for the oversight of not calling you prior to arrival, after the wedding had booked, to advise you of this and are glad that on the whole, you did enjoy your stay with us.

“Daughter's Wedding 26th November 2011”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

Our daughter held her wedding at this venue and we can only heap praise on the staff and venue. The overall arrangements went smoothly and professionally and on the day all went extremely well. We have to single out Kelly who handled operations on the day extremely well. She was most helpful to all members of our wedding party. The dining area was transformed with the expert help of our florists and the bedrooms that we saw were delightful. We did not see the stable block but do appreciate rooms are small. For the length of time one is in them does it really matter. The food was very good and our thanks go to the chef.

Room Tip: The main house seems to have the larger rooms. Lovely views from room 8.
