“Comfortable, well priced and friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

This is a typical of the very best type of small German gasthof. Rooms very comfortable with all mod cons. Lovely views and situated at the very edge of the village. Pleasant undemanding low level walks from the hotel. It is only a few miles from the Chiemsee and a good base to explore the area from. Restaurant good quality with decent choice. Beware portion size on the starters!
Friendly unobtrusive service by a delightful staff. Gemutlich!

Room Tip: My single room did not have the view so maybe worth paying a bit moire a double?

“Second visit and still wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

Second visit to this hotel. It was once again a wonderful stay. Very clean, good food, good location and you feel really "taken cared" of. Rented e-bikes one day which was great fun, although the weather wasn't really that wonderful.

Already planning our next visit!

“Perfect location and super friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 June 2011

Before I go on to the hotel itself, I'd like to talk a little about Unterwossen. By my standards it's pretty much the perfect location. Big enough to have a convenient selection of restaurants and a drug store in walking distance, but not as crowded and touristy as the larger towns nearer to the lake. Plus, it is a very short drive to Marquartstein, which has a bit more selection. While the featured picture is a little misleading (there are houses directly behind the photographer, and just outside the left of the frame), it is very scenic, quaint, and you can hike right out from the doorstep.

This region in general speaks very little English compared to other parts of Germany, and the hotel was no exception, there were I think two staff members who spoke a little english, and none who were really fluent. It may be different in the high season, but it seems most of the tourists here were other Germans. That said, everyone we met was incredibly friendly and willing to engage us in pantomime and poor pronunciation on both sides until we communicated what we needed: perhaps the upside of seeing few foreign tourists is that they are still a novelty. The woman we interacted with most seemed to genuinely have fun trying to think of different ways to communicate something until we all understood each other.

The name 'Land Hotel Gabriel' translates to 'Country Hotel Gabriel', and that is a very good description. Things were very simple, but clean and in good condition with no stains, damage, or funny smells. It is not trying to be luxurious, nor kitschy-touristy, but has all the basics you need. The service, as I mentioned before was incredibly friendly but non-intrusive - the best we encountered in this country.

It seemed like there was some sort of equipment rental available through the hotel as well, bikes at least, and possibly other amenities. If you speak better German than we do it might be worth asking about.

The in-house restaurant has the same enthusiastic service as the desk. The breakfast is a good German standard (breads, yogurt, cereal, cheese, fruit, cold cuts). The dinner is good enough as well, but the town has better restaurants within walking distance.

Bottom line, simple but clean and welcoming hotel, with absolutely perfect location and service.

“Wonderful! Feels like staying with family”

Stayed here for a week over Christmas. This is a wonderful place! They really take care of you. Excellent location on the edge of Unterwössen which is a little nice town that has restaurants, shops, a pharmacy, banks, a sport shop where you can rent equipment, etc. Great walking tracks (with excellent signs), wonderful cross country skiing tracks etc. Some 10 km from Reit im Winkel where you could go to Winklmoos Alm for some excellent downhill skiing etc.
The hotel itself is a wonderful place, nice rooms that were very clean, quiet location and a wonderful staff that really take care of you. We had half board food and it was excellent - before we arrived here we thought that it was going to be a lot of sausages and basic food but it we more like excellent home cooking and the 4 course dinners for the Christmas days we really excellent and something you could have eaten at a 5 star restaurant. Good selection of beer and wine (and alcohol) at good prices.
During Christmas there were different events at night (although we didn't understand everything because of the Bavarian German), but one night St Nicolaus appeared and one night the chef made Glüwhein which was really interesting and was the best Glüwhein we have tasted (and they didn't charge you for it).
I could go on forever but if you want a quite place, perfect for different sport activities where you get excellent service (they even removed the snow from our car when it had snowed) and great food then you can't find a better place.
The only negative thing I can say - and this really is the only negative thing - is that the beds might be a little to firm and has a board at the foot end which made it a little short for me (being 193 cm long) - but the beds are quite wide so it wasn't really a problem.

“Excellent Value and beautiful surroundings”

We had a wonderful time in a well appointed, super clean room with superior dining for a week. The staff went out of their way to ensure we had a terrific stay and we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area, either for the winter or spring/summer season. An excellent choice for anyone wishing to have a great time at a reasonable cost.
