Before I go on to the hotel itself, I'd like to talk a little about Unterwossen. By my standards it's pretty much the perfect location. Big enough to have a convenient selection of restaurants and a drug store in walking distance, but not as crowded and touristy as the larger towns nearer to the lake. Plus, it is a very short drive to Marquartstein, which has a bit more selection. While the featured picture is a little misleading (there are houses directly behind the photographer, and just outside the left of the frame), it is very scenic, quaint, and you can hike right out from the doorstep.
This region in general speaks very little English compared to other parts of Germany, and the hotel was no exception, there were I think two staff members who spoke a little english, and none who were really fluent. It may be different in the high season, but it seems most of the tourists here were other Germans. That said, everyone we met was incredibly friendly and willing to engage us in pantomime and poor pronunciation on both sides until we communicated what we needed: perhaps the upside of seeing few foreign tourists is that they are still a novelty. The woman we interacted with most seemed to genuinely have fun trying to think of different ways to communicate something until we all understood each other.
The name 'Land Hotel Gabriel' translates to 'Country Hotel Gabriel', and that is a very good description. Things were very simple, but clean and in good condition with no stains, damage, or funny smells. It is not trying to be luxurious, nor kitschy-touristy, but has all the basics you need. The service, as I mentioned before was incredibly friendly but non-intrusive - the best we encountered in this country.
It seemed like there was some sort of equipment rental available through the hotel as well, bikes at least, and possibly other amenities. If you speak better German than we do it might be worth asking about.
The in-house restaurant has the same enthusiastic service as the desk. The breakfast is a good German standard (breads, yogurt, cereal, cheese, fruit, cold cuts). The dinner is good enough as well, but the town has better restaurants within walking distance.
Bottom line, simple but clean and welcoming hotel, with absolutely perfect location and service.
