“Peaceful, beautiful, with a classic charm”

We went to Pondy from Bangalore during the Jan 26 long weekend. We booked Kaliash Beach Resort through ezeego and got some additional discount which was not available through direct telephonic booking. Infact, the receptionist himself told that it would be cheaper to book online. We took two rooms for 3N/4D. The access road to the resort is easy to find but a bit secluded. We had MapMyIndia, so didn't have any problem in locating the resort. The resort is about 10 kms away from the main city. There's nothing much around the resort and you have to drive at least four kms to reach some shops.

The checkin was fast and the rooms were ready when we reached at around 2:30pm. We wanted pool facing rooms but they were already occupied, so had to do with garden facing rooms. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable. They have a home-stay feel and there's no TV in the room (which is actually good as you get time to talk and spend time together). The toilets are also spacious and clean - but there's something about the color of the walls and floor that they give a feeling of being old and dirty. The bed and pillows were too hard for us; luckily the spare pillows kept in the room were softer. The bed cover looked old and faded and they didn't change it during our stay. Overall the room was nice and comfortable and I was happy with it. Though the resort offers free wifi, the signals were too weak in our room, so couldn't use it inside.

Restaurant - this is the part where the resort has many negative aspects. The restaurant service is pathetic. The food is far from tasty, served toooo late, and is always barely warm. Whenever you enquire about your food, they'll say that it's ready, but never bring it to the table. The breakfast spread is okay for day one, but they don't change it much - so it got really boring on day three of our stay. It seems that they have three-four guys to cater to every need - be it food or room service - or anything else that a guest asks for. The weired part is that they don't serve tea or coffee during any of the meal times. What if you wish to have tea after your meal? Anyways, the tea is almost always cold - so no use. If you have your own vehicle, it's best to go to any other city restaurant to have lunch/dinner - this restaurant is useless.

The property is well-maintained, close to the beach, and as everybody else has also written, the pool is wonderful and large. The beach timings are 6 am to 6 pm and pool closes at 7 pm. They don't even let you go to the beach side for a walk after 6 pm - that's odd. There's a guard at the gate who warns everybody who goes out that you must get back by 6 pm (as if the beach is haunted).

There's nothing for toddlers apart from playing at the beach and pool. There's so much space in the resort, they could've easily added some swings/slides for the kids.

Overall, I would say the stay was good except the food - which was the lowest point of the resort.

“Old India charm at it's best!”

We discovered this beautiful oasis of relaxation by chance after discovering our reservation at another hotel was only a reservation request. Because Jan/Feb is wedding season, all the hotels were booked in Pondi. We drove around for an hour at 1 am looking for a room. We were about to drive back to Chennai when we came across the Kailash Resort. The room was beautiful, the beds were firm but surprisingly comfortable and the old decor put you back in time in a very good way. We woke up to a complementary breakfast, took a walk on one of the cleanest beaches I have been to in India, and then had the most marvelous day around the gorgeous pool. It's a little bit of a drive to Pondi, like 15 minutes, but we were looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city. The service was very friendly and we will be back sooner than later I hope.

“Great service even in the aftermaths after a cyclone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

It was only after arriving at Chennai, we heard that a cyclone had hit the area only four days before, so we were rather uncertain about what to expect when we arrived. The road from the mainroad to Kailash was strewn with broken branches and leaves and there were knocked over electric poles and ruined houses. The catastrophe was apparent. The neighboring hotel was closed, But: Kailash Beach Resort was open and functioning and the staff was attentive and helpfull. The whole area was without electricity, but the hotel has its own generator, so everthing functioned almost normally. Quite remarkable
The rooms have a classic colonial feel with an refreshing lack of tv, minibar and other such nuisances. It´s a rural, quiet place and perhaps too quiet for some people, but it´s easy to get to Pondycherry by rickshaw for some change of pace. The staff is very attentive and friendly and the pool was great! It´s a beautiful place, even if a lot of trees were knocked over or stripped of their leaves - they had already started sprouting fresh leaves before we left. I imagine it will soon be as beautiful as before.
If i should suggest an improvement: a mattress pad would do wonders as the beds are rather hard!

“Serene but could do more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Kailash Resort is spread over a beautiful property and has clean, simple rooms. The concept revolves around cutting yourself off from the outside world and with no TVs, no minibar, etc in the rooms, I suppose it makes that point.
Our family visited in Dec 11. We paid about 5k a night, but weren't happy with the rooms. Though we had no complaints about the cleanliness, some simple things irked us - no soap dishes in the bath, no running hot water because the resort depends on solar panels, mosquito netting on the outside of the room allowing people to just lift the net and jump into a room. One of us got a room (room 7) with a bathroom whose windows opened to the outside passage and we had to ask for another set of curtains for the bathroom window. The bathrooms are pretty basic but clean.
Also, the restaurant food wasn't great - the menu variety is limited and the service pretty slow.

The positives are the lovely swimming pool, the friendly and smiling staff and the absolute serenity of the place.

It would be best if you have your own car/ taxi because the resort is at some distance from the town. The resort has Wifi, a decent massage centre and access a public beach.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in the main block-more spacious
