This was our second stay at the Hotel de l'Orient. When my wife and I stayed here for a week in 2008 we were satisfied and impressed in every way. Our recent stay was also quite pleasant, but we've decided that the quality of the experience in this small hotel depends heavily on how busy it is, which room you have, and which staff members you encounter.
For our earlier stay we had the spectacular Karaikal room -- large, secluded, and elegantly furnished, with its own spacious courtyard overlooking the larger courtyard downstairs. This time all the large rooms were booked, so we settled for the much smaller Arcot room on the ground floor. (Arcot also has a private courtyard, but it's quite small and not particularly inviting.) The room was pleasant and the furniture was charming, and it was a good deal less expensive than the larger rooms, but it was just a nice place to stay, whereas the Karaikal is a destination in itself.
Almost all the staff members were courteous and diligent and seemed to care a lot about our satisfaction. But we did have a couple of unsatisfactory dealings with a staff member who seemed to enjoy delivering bad news. And all the staff members seemed a bit frazzled at times, perhaps because the hotel was fully booked and there always seemed to be several groups checking in, often with some truly amazing quantities and sizes of luggage. This made the small reception area and fairly small adjoining courtyard far less inviting and relaxing than they were on our previous visit.
We really enjoyed the excellent French bread at breakfast, although Neemrana could stand to improve its signature-brand coffee, tea, and preserves. There's also a south Indian breakfast, but it has to be specially ordered (unlike the bread and preserves, which are on a buffet table) and it did not sound very interesting. The staff seemed to find it odd that Western visitors were even asking about the Indian breakfast. We also had dinner a couple of nights; the food was acceptable but not memorable. But the ambience in the courtyard/dining area is awfully nice.
There were a few other minor problems -- for instance, our room had its own hot water heater that had to be turned on before every shower and that only seemed to be good for one short shower at a time -- but on balance the Hotel de l'Orient is a classy and comfortable place in a charming destination. We'll certainly visit Pondicherry again, and we'll probably want to stay at this hotel.
