We have just returned from our second stay in the R2 Pajara Beach, staying on an all-inclusive basis. Normally we do not go back to the same hotel 2 years in a row but we enjoyed our stay so much last time that we returned for another 2 weeks 7 to 21 January. (If anything we enjoyed our second stay even more than the first).
I genuinely do not understand the complaints about rude staff that I have read in other reviews of this hotel. From the moment of our arrival until departure all members of staff - cleaners, porters, reception, restaurant, bar staff, etc were, without exception, polite, helpful and added to the enjoyment we experienced.
Possibly it helped that we were pleasant to the staff and attempted to use some very basic Spanish including the magic words – please and thank you! Surely it is not too much to attempt hello, good day, good evening, good night, please, thank you, goodbye and ordering drinks in Spanish – go on try it! If the staff in this hotel are rude to you then I can only wonder what caused that to happen.
Another complaint about other nationalities receiving preferential treatment is, in our experience, not substantiated. One or two of the guests did seem to be particularly friendly with the restaurant staff but this could be explained by the fact that they were regular visitors and stayed for extended periods. Some couples had an amazing tan when we arrived and were still staying in the hotel when we left 2 weeks later!
There are a couple of things that, with some rearrangement could be improved on. The main restaurant is badly laid out compared to most other hotels we have stayed in. The show cooking and other hot dishes (sauces, vegetables, etc) are all in a line leading to long queues. Adopting the method of splitting the show cooking and all other hot dishes into separate areas could solve this. The bar on the same floor as the main restaurant does get very busy and there is usually only one person behind the bar another member of staff would alleviate this problem.
Where the hotel is situated is ideal for us since we like to be out of the main centre and enjoy walking – Costa Calma itself is a quiet resort compared to most others. The beaches, in common with most beaches on Fuerteventura, are clothing optional – keep the costume on or take it off, up to you, just don’t complain or be offended. The only people who seem to become annoyed over this arrangement are the ones who opt to stay clothed, we haven’t come across anyone in the nude hassling someone wearing a costume!
I cannot comment on the facilities around the pool since we sunbathed on the beach – without costumes.
We also didn’t take part in any of the organised activities or go to any of the entertainment.
There was always a choice of food in the main restaurant especially a really extensive selection of fresh fruit and salad ingredients if you didn’t want something hot every lunch or evening meal. We found the local wines perfectly drinkable – you won’t find the finest Chablis or Barolo on an all-inclusive deal, at least not to our knowledge!
Feeding the chipmunks on the promenade just outside of the hotel is great fun – they are tame enough to take the food from out of your hand. Most mornings there is a bowl of walnuts to have with your breakfast cereal, the chipmunks like them too!, or they also like some fresh apple – maybe the water content.
There is a 20 euro deposit for beach towels which is fairly standard with most hotels this is, of course, refundable. The charge to hire a safety deposit box for 2 weeks was 35 euros, again fairly standard.
We believe this hotel deserves its star rating – it may not be the equivalent of a 4 star in the UK but then most of the other 4 stars we have stayed in including Greece, other Canary islands and mainland Spain are of a similar quality or, in at least one case, worse that the Pajara Beach.
If we found a similar deal to the one we had this year then we wouldn’t hesitate to return.
