“VERY UNUSUAL HOTEL BUT WELL WORTH STAYING.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Stayed at the Risco del Gato in November 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The 'pod' like structures are lovely and having your own private courtyard with sun beds was fabulous. The room included a very stylish bathroom with full walk in shower and circular jacuzzi bath, a dressing area, a bedroom with two double beds and a separate living room with a second TV and beautiful large windows. Costa Calma is a quiet resort with mostly large all-inclusive hotels but we really enjoyed our stay and found some lovely walks. Would certainly return.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the top row of pods nearest to Reception.

“Friendly and Personal Service”

We could not fault the accommodation, staff, or service at this all suite hotel. The meals were first class and varied with a good mixture of buffet and table serve at breakfast and dinner. The gardens were immaculate.
The hotel is very quiet. There was no piped music at the pools or crowded areas. It was perfect for our needs as an older couple wanting peace and quiet. It would definitely not be suitable for families or younger couples looking for stimulation and entertainment.
The surrounding area was also quiet but the nearby hotels offered a change of scene and some entertainment.
The coastline had beautiful white/golden beaches and are a paradise for windsurfers, paragliders and kite-surfers.
My husband was presented with a bottle of chilled champagne(Cava) and a personal
message from the managing director on his birthday, which incidentally, was unannounced by us. I thought this was a very nice touch.

“Relaxing Stay at the Risco del Gato”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

First of all, if you want to play ball sports and listen to loud music whilst sitting beside the swimming pool, then the Risco del Gato is not for you. However, if a peaceful stay with good food and not having to fight over sunbeds is more your ‘cup of tea’, then this is the place to stay.
My wife and I stayed at the Risco del Gato for the first two weeks in October 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel classifies itself as a ‘suite hotel’ and is made up of 51 suites. Each suite has its own inner patio with an outdoor shower and two sun loungers, with another door leading to a terraced area and small private garden where a table, two chairs and sun umbrella are located. Inside each suite there is a lounge, a bedroom with two double beds, a clothes storage area and a pretty fancy bathroom with its’ own Jacuzzi. (see photos).
The hotel has three swimming pools, one indoor heated pool and two external ones. There are also two Wellness centres, one located by the main swimming pool housing two saunas, a ‘Turkish’ steam room, a four person Jacuzzi and massage rooms. The hotel also has an extensively well-equipped gymnasium (see photos). The use of the saunas, steam room, Jacuzzi and gymnasium are all free, and there is only a charge for the various massages on offer. There is no pressure from the hotel for guests to book massages and as we were staying for two weeks, we were entitled to two 30-minute massages each free.
All of the hotel staff is extremely friendly and very professional. We arrived late on Saturday evening and were greeted by Dominik at Reception, who welcomed us with a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed chilled orange juice and informed us that as we had arrived too late for the evening meal he had arranged a cold buffet for both of us to be ready in the restaurant after we had been shown to our suite. Other staff includes Bernando on Reception (who was always helpful), whilst in the restaurant there was Chico, two Antonios, Paco and Veronica. At breakfast there are two chefs (Carlos and Yakko), on hand to cook eggs to your requirements and I tended to have pancakes (crepês) every morning covered in lemon juice and sugar (delicious).
The hotel’s clientele are mainly German tourists so the staff tended to speak more German than English, but we had no trouble. All of the meal selection on the restaurant menus is shown in Spanish, German and English. Wednesday nights tend to be a specialist night or Gala Dinner, whereas Friday night is usually BBQ Night. With the exception of these two nights, we did not have the same meal twice during our fortnight stay.
The beach is located only a five minute walk away from the hotel and the beach in Costa Calma is an extremely long, sandy one. All sections of the beach are frequented by naturists, so if you are of a nervous disposition or wary of seeing someone “with it all hanging out”, then you’d be advised to take a pair of blinkers just in case :-) .
Would we stay at the Risco del Gato again? Most certainly we would and are currently looking for an opportunity to stay there in April 2012.

“Surprising accomodation!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011

We drove around Fuerteventura (car hire is advisable) and saw many places. We think that Costa Calma is one of the best location, situated right at the beginning of the kilometer-long Playa de Sotovento, a spectacular, infinite white-golden beach, a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers (every year a wind and kitesurf world championship takes place there). The hotel is located on a small hill facing the ocean, although not "along the seaside". One can reach the beach using a short path (slight slope). Although surrounded by relatively tall hotel building from many of their suites (very large, like a small apartment with a hollywoodian bathroom) one can see the ocean, since in the point of the coast no other hotels were built between Vik Risco del Gato and the beach. Supermarkets and other facilities at walking distance.

“Amazing and unique, so lovely and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

What a lovely place, an amazing find! My only worry is that we have now been spoilt and won't find anywhere else that matches it! We were recommended the Vik group as we have been told their Villa Vik on Lanzarote is a lovely place to stay. We opted for Fuerteventura as we have not visited the island before. We were not disappointed!

If you want a quiet holiday in a spacious, calm environment with no bother about getting a sun bed by the pool, this is the place. There was no noise, such a nice change from the all inclusive scene. The suite consisted of a bungalow/ pod with an inner patio and a patio and a walled desert garden with beautiful shrubs which were well looked after. Each suite has 2 sun loungers, a patio table, parasol, chairs, an outdoor shower and a totally enclosed area where you can sit if it very windy. We had a sea view. There is a quiet road in between the hotel grounds and the sea. There are lots of routes down to the beaches. The Sotavento beach is an amazing desert beach, so vast with only a smattering of people walking along the coastline. It is very windy and a there is a wind/ kite surf school on the beach.

We had great weather although it was windy and returned to the Uk with great tans.

Breakfast was good, beach bar was good at lunch time and the BBQ once a week was great.

Parts of the hotel are a bit quirky i.e. the main lounge is shabby chic, there are parrots and budgies in large enclosures and ducks on a pond but all in all a very pleasant hotel with nice people and good facilities. Not suitable for children over 2 though as there's nothing for them to do!
