“Great hotel but a pity about the view from the Spa.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

The Calypso is perhaps one of the best places to stay in the south of Fuerteventura. It is right on the beach, south facing, a short walk from the shops and bars of Morro Jable and within walking distance of the resort of Playa Jandia.
Our room, 325, had a wonderful view out to sea and was very quiet. I loved the walk in shower and the huge terrace (with recliners), the bed was comfy, but it was a pity that you couldn't watch the TV from there. The flat screen TV could only be seen from the sofa. The room was clean and well maintained.
We booked the hotel on the internet and were only offered half board, with buffet dinner included. As this is a large hotel we found that the restaurant had all the ambience of a staff canteen. The food was very german themed, with a total lack of Canary Island specialities (except for the bananas). However the staff were very pleasant, especially Jacobo and Manuel. On the second evening we ate in the Kulinarium Restaurant, a la carte. It was well worth the extra money and they did discount the price of the buffet. The meal was exquisite and the ambience much more intimate.
The evening entertainment was very good, especially the couple imitating Robbie Williams, George Michael, Cher and Celine Dion - they were a wonderful act. The bar staff and cocktail menu were excellent.
Breakfast was OK, not a lot of freash fruit, no soya milk and no smoked salmon. At least the coffee was plentiful, and again the staff very good.
The Spa is on the second floor and leads out onto a huge terrace with sun beds and a jacuzzi. As we were relaxing on the recliners in the Spa we wondered why the windows had been covered with an opaque plastic film, blocking out the view of the sea. However a few minutes later we found out why. This seems to be a Nudist Spa!. It wasn't to block out the view, but to stop people looking in!. We were later joined by several naked germans, who didn't even bother to cover up with towels when walking between the steam room and sauna. They didn't bother to sit on a towel in the sauna either. At one stage, in the steam room I was almost squashed between two very well built, naked germans, and to be honest felt slightly uncomfortable. This is not a place I will visit with my elderly parents and I now understand why the hotel is for Adults Only.
Generally I found that all the staff were very professional, and the hotel is in a nice spot. However if you have a rented car, parking was a problem. There is only space for about 15 cars outside the hotel and as the area was very built up it was a nightmare to park.
I would return to the hotel (without my bikini) and I think it is very suited to a romantic getaway, with lovely bedrooms and private terraces. A great place for a Winter break.

“Excellent”

We had been to this hotel a few years back, it was very good then. We are regular visitors to the resort of Jandia & noted the hotel was being refurbished, we thought we would like to go when completed.
We could find no big UK travel agents who dealt with the hotel but found Corona Holidays. They were very helpful and got us a good deal, I recommend them.
So we returned back to the newly refurbished Calypso, it was excellent, room superb, really big, flat screen TV, not much English though, lovely balcony, AC, everything you need. WiFi in room for 20 euros a week or free in reception area.
Hotel very nice, lovely poolside, very comfy sunbeds, not crowded.
All the food was to a high standard, lovely restaurant facilities.
Because there was no big UK agents we were the only Brits for most of the fortnight, the manager remarked on this every time we saw him. Most of the guests here are German with a splattering of other Euro nationals. This does not bother us. I must highlight the entertainment wasn't up to much, this does not bother us anyway.
I've stayed at many hotels in the resort and would rate this as the very best, we will return.
A splendid fortnight.

Room Tip: Almost any sea facing rooms are good.

“Fabulous beach and friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2009

Having stayed at and thoroughly enjoyed the Riu Palace in Jandia in 2005 we wanted to return there in September 2009, but there were no sea-view rooms available. We read the reviews of the Riu Calypso and even though some of the photos were a bit worrying decided that the beach-side location was worth the risk of the hotel not being up to scratch.

Well, we had a fantastic holiday and really didn't want to leave at the end of the week. We were given Room 30, a large room with a huge terrace just above the promenade leading to Morro Jable, and with the most incredible views of the soft sandy beach and the beautiful turquoise sea. Yes the room was tired in places, with a small bit of plaster coming off one of the walls and a chip in the bath enamel, but the large room was spotlessly clean, had a seating area with sofa, chair and table, a minibar, a double bed (not two singles pushed together) and the balcony also had a table and chairs plus two sunloungers.

The hotel staff were really friendly and keen to practise their English on us. Well, we were the only 2 Brits in the hotel, the other guests being mainly German and Spanish. But we got on well with everyone, trying to communicate in various languages even if we didn't pronounce things quite right and getting a few puzzled looks. The Germans didn't bag the sunloungers, not that they needed to as there were plenty to go around, and everyone seemed happy and smiling, including the waiters and bar staff who at the end of their very long days were still in playful mood.

Each night there was entertainment of some sort, either the resident band "Perfecto" who would sing faster, more modern songs for us once they realised there was someone in the audience who needed more stimulating music than waltzes and quicksteps, or some sort of show 3 nights a week. We had an ABBA tribute band, a superb magician and an Argentinian Tango dance troupe during the week that we were there, and all were very enjoyable evenings.

Food from the buffet was so good that we never ate out, even though we had intended to. The Sunday morning breakfast included smoked salmon and sparkling wine, other mornings had different specialities including fresh fruit smoothies prepared by a lovely lady chef from Portugal. There were yoghurts, cereals, lots of fresh fruit, ham, cheeses, different breads and the usual cooked bacon, eggs, baked beans etc. The evening buffets were also very good, catering for all tastes including vegetarian. Some nights were better than others, or more to our tastes I should say as the food quality was always good even if we didn't fancy the theme of the food for the evening.

There was a gym, which we didn't use, and we also didn't use the pool even though it looked gorgeous, because we love the beach, and you don't get many better beaches than the one just beside the hotel. The best beach on the island for us is Sotovento, a 15 minute drive away from Jandia, just before Costa Calma, but the beach by the Riu Calypso is a close second. Topless ladies were a frequent sight on the beach by the hotel but there were very few nudists, as they tend to go to Sotovento.

So if you want a fabulous beach, good food, friendly staff and are willing to try speaking German or Spanish, I would recommend the Riu Calypso. It's not as posh as the Palace, but it was a comfortable friendly place in a superb location, with the cafes and shops of Morro Jable including a large Spar supermarket just a few minutes walk away.

“What a beautiful location & views over the ocean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2009

When we landed at Fuerteventura airport we hired a car and had a relaxing drive down to Morra Hable, just follow the main road right down South until you come to the hotel.
Our 1st impressions of the hotel and location was beautiful.
The reception were very friendly, our room was on the 2nd floor. (217). Our room was very nice and extremely clean, it was very large and spacious, the only fault we could find was 2 tiny cracks in the bath tiles, but they were hardly noticable. It was beautiful. The balcolny was huge, complete with 3 sunbeds, also a patio suite, also the views were simply just amazing.
The staff were extremely polite and they played with our litte 5 year old boy lots, which he loved especially at meal times, they were fabulous.
The food was very good, with a good selection everynight, the prawns and mussels were the best, fresh fish available every night, definately value for money.
The pool was cleaned every morning, but felt the small childrens pool was just a bit to small, it was very clean though. The play area was small as well but that doesnt really matter, a beach is a lot more fun.
I think we were the only British in the hotel and the youngest, people seems to be 55+, and German but that didn not put us off at all, they were very friendly.
I would definatley return back to the hotel again, cant wait to return. Adored the location, a few steps on to the beach.
The promenade was really well cared for and a walk to Jandia took us 10 minutes walking slowly, what a beautiful area, the best on all the Island.

“What a lovely treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2008

I stayed at the Riu Calypso from 22 - 29 December 2007 for my Christmas getaway and what a lovely treat. I had been struggling to find something suitable for over Christmas but had my eye on the Calypso. Although I paid more than I wanted to (£200+ single room supplement), it was well worth it.

When I arrived at the hotel I was told that, although I had just booked a standard room, as the hotel wasn't full they had upgraded me to a sea view. I was a little confused as, with the layout of this hotel, being built into the side of a cliff, I had assumed that all had sea view rooms, but I was very relieved after paying such a high single room supplement that I was getting at least what everyone else would be getting for my money! The room was very spacious with a huge bathroom and the biggest balcony I've ever seen. It had two proper sunlounges and a table and two chairs on it!! The view was fantastic looking out over the sea. I was very happy!!

The food in the hotel was fantastic. I have stayed at a Riu before and the food was very good there but this hotel had an absolutely huge choice every day and still of a good quality. There are two sittings, 6 pm and 8 pm, and you are told which one you are in when you arrive at the hotel, but I think you can change if you have a word with the Head Waiter. However, I found that some of the staff's English was quite poor although one of the Managers does speak very good English so there is usually someone around to translate if you have problems.

The entertainment was okay. I'm not usually one for watching it but as it was Christmas I made the effort and we had a Beetles tribute band one night who were really good. The bar staff were very friendly and entertaining.

You will find that the Brits are certainly in the minority at this hotel, and probably in this resort as well. There were 7 Brits in the hotel when I was there, the rest mainly German. I always find with travelling alone that the Germans usually speak to me so I don't have a problem with them.

There was no fight for a sunbed, plenty of them around the pool and you are practically on the beach so that's always an option if it is too busy by the pool, but if you're not into nudity then you may have to avert your eyes whilst on the beach - plenty of German OAP's letting it all hang out!!

There is a supermarket not far from the hotel, just passed the petrol station up some steps on the right hand side. The supermarket is huge with lots of choice.

Well, what else can I say. I had a lovely Christmas break at the Calypso and would highly recommend it. Just one problem I exprienced was that on arrival one of the lifts was out of action and this remained the case throughout my week's stay, which meant that everyone in the hotel had to use the one same lift. By the end of the week it had become quite a joke but no good if you were in a rush to get back to your room. With 12 floors (I was on the 9th) it's a long walk up!!!

For those of you who like to holiday without many children around, I am happy to say that this hotel didn't have many at all. It may be different in the summer months but for me at Christmas it was excellent.

Thanks to Val, Pete, Iris, Audley, Gloria & David - the only other Brits in the hotel - for helping me to have a lovely time at the Calypso. My week wasn't long enough and I could've happily stayed longer.

  • Liked — The huge balcony, food and location
  • Disliked — Balcony being overlooked and the problems with the lift
