“Typically Greek - basic & clean”

First time we've gone to a hotel rather than self catering in Greece, but we weren't disappointed. Astro is a basic hotel, the rooms are a reasonable size but a bit lacking in storage space for clothes! Rooms and the hotel we're kept spotless throughout our stay. Breakfast was a standard continental and yes as someone previously commented it was the same each day but exactly what we'd have if we were self catering, meat, cheese, salad, cake, cereal, eggs & bread. End of season so everywhere was quiet including the hotel.

Good location for getting to beach and restaurants. Danas just opposite hotel at bottom of road going up mountain is a great, cheap family run restaurant really worth trying. Beware the 2 competing restaurants Petras and No Name Steak house on way down to beach. Petras is good but weren't impressed with No Name they tried a little too hard constantly telling you how fabulous everything was during meal. Petrino Garden Restaurant just passed No Name has a lovely little garden restaurant away from road and excellent food.To avoid the rat run of restaurants on way to beach, go up the start of the mountain road and at 1st corner go down towards car park then go left to get to front.

On Prom we tried Poseiden, food was really goo (Go to beach and turn left. Also a hotel on the front can't remember name but it has "Fresh Pasta" across front of it and free beach area for guests (something like Seaview or Seaside I think, its the restaurant before Poseiden) The Hook Bar (go to beach and turn right) great for a drink with its own mix of 60s, 70s & 80s music.

Top tip if you go to Oia for sunset, rather than joining the masses watching sunset in village there is a little cafe on the corner near the coach park which is a lot quieter and you can watch the sunset in comfort with a glass of beer etc.

Room Tip: We ended up with a room overlooking the road which was a bit noisy on a morning/afternoon but got su...

“Just what we wanted”

Really nice hotel, a bit basic but spotlessly clean. Nice pool area with plenty of loungers. The staff were really helpful and friendly. On the day that we left my husband lost his phone. The staff helped us look for it but couldnt find it. After we had left for the airport the cleaner found the phone in our room and the manager of the Astro came to the airport, found us and gave us the phone. I dont think many would bother to do that, we were really impressed. Kamari itself was a really friendly, laid back resort. On the beach you had to pay for the loungers and parasols but this was only 2 euro and the girls who looked after this were excellent, they were around if you wanted them to get you drinks or food but not so much that you felt pressured by them. Will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the side not the road

Don't be fooled by the number of stars and/or images on the hotel's website. It has nothing to do with the reality.
Major minuses: the manager of the hotel, a grumpy and not so mannered individual, who acted as if he did us a favor to accept us in his "superior" shack. 2. The breakfast was so poor that I can't find a proper word to describe it. Every damn day the same food (cheese, a low quality kind of ham, tomatoes, cucumber, yogurt, boiled egs, butter, bread, jam, coffee and something pretending to be juice). I don't think I'll ever eat cheese and egs after this. 3. The rooms are quite small and the smell of cleaning products is quite strong. Imagine that I'm saying so although I got a superior room after bargening with the "friendly" manager. The other room he prepared for us was even smaller and aunts were marching all over the place. The facilities of the rooms are quite poor and look very old. I had to ask for the remote to the tv and AC, because apparently they were nowhere to find in the room. Anywhay the range of tv channels was so poor, mostly in Greek, that I returned the very next day. What I didn't understood was why
did I had to pay 1 euro/ day to use the safe????!!! 3. The pool is very small and the water needed to be changed, but this didn't happeneded while we stayed there.
The hotel staff, apart from the what seemede to be the big bad manager, is nice and quite receptive to your needs.
The good thing about this hotel is that is quite close to the beach and in easy reach to the supermarkets and tavernas. I would recommend Danas (very, very nice owners) and Academy. Also we enjoyed Ethnic, an animated cafe/ bar with live music performed by two very talented young artists.
The island and its sorroundings is very beautiful to make up for the not so happy experience we had with our accommodation. I wouldn't have written such a harsh review if the prices they ask for what they offer you weren't so high.

“Excellent Hotel”

we have recently returned from a 2 week stay at the Astro Hotel and cannot understand some of the negative reviews
The Hotel is within easy reach of Restaurants shops beach and supermarkets and is one of the cleanest hotels we have stayed in -the bed linen and towels were changed daily and the hotel was kept very clean by Lara who also prepared the breakfasts and looked after reception - a real asset to Makarios the owner
there are plenty of restaurants near by I would recommend The Taverna SALIDA which is next door to the hotel family run and good Greek food
We hired a car from LOIZOS which was a good price cost was not n much more than the cost of the local bus fare of 1.60 Euro person
A visit to Thira (Fira) and Hia is a must a little more expensive than Kamari but well worth the visit
there are many places along the beach front in Kamrai for a morning Latte etc but I would recommend Navys
All in all we found the people very friendly .
Thanks to Makarios Lara Hammy and Stelios for a great stay at the Astro
We would recommend it and would return

Room Tip: we found rooms on the side were best -18 19 20

“Odd hiccup but an enjoyable stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

Our stay at the Astro Hotel was booked through Hotels4U as there were no rooms remaining on the Thomas Cook web page-our friends had probably booked the last one. A ten minute taxi ride for 15 Euro from the airport saw us arrive at the hotel and our first meeting with the manager/owner(?) Makarios. I handed over my rather plain looking accomodation voucher and within minutes we were directed to our room on the second floor. This is probably my 15th visit to Greece and I know what to expect regarding the rooms but this one was just a bit too small for two of us for two weeks. I explained my thoughts to Makarios who offered one of the family suites at a negotiated nightly rate to be settled at the end of our stay. These rooms offer self catering facilities,a larger bathroom, a sofa, patio, and bedroom on a mezzanine level, oh and a outdoor jacuzzi (more of that in a minute). The change of room was quickly and easily arranged with no bad feelings on either side.

Shortly after our friends arrived and we used the services of the on site bar. I have to say that the price was rather high at 3 Euros for a 330ml bottle of Mythos beer so this was the only time that we used it. This was a shame as the grounds are lovely and I'm sure more people would have used the bar for an after pool/beach "sundowner" or post taverna nightcap if the prices weren't so high. The supermarket 70 yards away sells 4 X 500ml bottles for 4Euros so they got our business rather than the hotel.

The hotel is on the cormer of quite a busy street and sees quite a lot of traffic including the local bus to/from Fira. Having said that it is in a good location to access the beachfront and there are two tavernas within 20 seconds walk. We used Danas opposite a few times and the chicken souvlaki was especially succulent.

Our jacuzzi had dirty water in it and Makarios arranged for it to be emptied and refilled by one of his staff. Stelios did a grand job and made sure that all the bits of leaf, twig and general sediment were removed before he refilled the jacuzzi. Unfortunately they all came back as the supply pipes appear to have been disconnected in the off season allowing the debris to blow in. Stelios again emptied the pool and after prompting Makarios a few times he eventually made a few more connections to the assembly and finally the jacuzzi was fully functional after 4 days. A family a few rooms down never got theirs working however and the activation button was stuck due to being overpainted a few times. These problems should have been sorted out at the start of the season not three weeks or so into it and certainly not when people are paying for facilites they cannot use.

Our room was kept lovely and clean thanks to Natalia who is from the Ukraine. She doesn't speak much English but she was always smiling and willing to help. Our friends had the services of another maid and had to complain about some broken glass that they had reported not being swept up and the shower basin and sink not being cleaned.
Apart from Stelios-who tends to do the evening and night shift there is Ami from Romania on hand throughout the day. Both he and Stelios were always smiling and friendly. Makarios stays behind the reception desk for the most part and never appears to be off the phone, perhaps he is busy sorting out the Greek national debt! Having said that at least he is there and wasn't unhelpful when we asked where the gym was and booking an airport taxi at the end of our stay. The hotel has a PC available for internet access for a small charge but Makarios happily gave us the access code for my iPod and my wifes notebook so we could use the wifi in the reception area for nothing.

Overall I was more than happy with my stay. There are visitors from a number of countries staying there some of who were quite young and a bit loud but you see that in most places in Greece. The hotel is clean, well presented and provides a breakfast to set you up for the day. The pool is clean although it would have been nice for the pool lights to have been turned on at night as per the picture on the hotel web page.
