“great stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

We stayed together at a familyroom. It was a very pleasant week, the food was good, cleaning was very good, and the people very nice. This October 2010 we booked a bungalow suite for three persons for two weeks. Going next week!!!!!
Hurray!

We like Matala very much, not smobby, no real nice buildings, but a great atmosphere, good hills to walk, Red Beach with Joannis for Greek Coffeee!!!! And Sun Set Restaurant with Anna for wonderful views and good food.

“It was fine for what it was for a night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2010

We had a large 2 bedroom bungalow type place. Two good size bedrooms with a bath in the middle. The were supposed to be basically new but the construction was pretty shoddy and wires were still hanging out of the walls. I would be suprised if they are still standing in 10 years. The other rooms looked like something out of a bad horror movie, so you should skip them. The room itself was clean and the bathroom was a good size. Breakfast was served by the nice owner and his new puppy. Only a couple rooms were occupied as it was the start of the season so no buffet yet. The location is fine as long as you dont mind driving into the town and the beach. It is barely in the city limits and off the main drag going the wrong direction. All in all it was acceptable for a night but you really should find other digs if you are looking to be in the area for more than that.

“A great comfortable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2009

We checked in late afternoon and because the bungalow we'd reserved wasn't ready, we were promptly upgraded to a two bedroom unit. I was unsure what to expect, based on the mixed reviews, but we were not disappointed. The rooms were very modern and the bathroom was definitely the biggest one we saw during our entire trip to Greece. My only disappointment was I didn't have time to enjoy the large soaking tub that was separate from the shower. To anyone interested in staying here, make sure you book at the right hotel. There are many places with similar names. These are the URLs: http://www.valleyvillage.gr/ or http://www.greekhotel.com. I can't comment on the rooms or apartments, but the bungalows were built about a year ago and they are comfortable and modern.

“Great, fantastic vacations... Valley Village, Matala , Crete/Greece”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2009

Hospitality great...the best we have seen in Europe and beyond ...The food great with everything...breakfast and dinner: very good food (greek and continental)....service of the resort very, very good: Kostas, Demetrius and others (the management team) are/were there for you in every moment, providing the best for you and your needs.... a great satisfaction from their services... The hotel, the rooms, bungalow are very well furnished (beds, mattress, cabinet, a/c, bath tubs and others)...We were two couples, including a 5 years old child and a pregnant woman..:)...the two pools ( one is for children) are very nice, cleaned blue water and functional....We did stay in a bungalow= great....and for two weeks were treated like a family... it's a big international family: germans, americans, irish, bulgarians, slovenians and maybe others...quite, beautiful, very functional: this is our evaluation for the environment in this resort... the beach is just 10 minutes far way...the most beautiful sunset you can have in Mediterranean sea.... the town = Matala was/is so nice, clean and people were/are very polite, very warm and their hospitality is priceless...nice clubs and restaurants....the beach was like the "blue laguna" : blue sea water, nice sand and very interesting place/location as a culture, history and geography....The rent cars are there: just ask for Manolos or Kre-Kre…you can arrange trips at historic places, a trip at Santorini island ( we did …) and more…the management team is ready to help you on these things….you need just let them know and…they we will take care for your needs ASAP ….spoken languages are : german and english..or maybe more ??!!!.....
The evenings in the resort were very romantic including : the rich greek and continental dishes/food, drinks, candle lights, music and the lighting...the greek culture evening ( twice we did experienced these...) were the most fascinating nights in these resort....
In the end: it's worthy: every penny...every cents (euro or dollar...)... We are going back...for sure....:)

“This hotel has great potential....but is only half way there”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2009

We arrived late in the evening and were delighted to recieve an upgrade from the booked one bed to the luxury two bed bungalow. The new 2 bed bungalows (builtin 2008) are modern and spacious, and as we had our three year old with us, it gave us the chance to enjoy a little more privacy, rather than being squashed in one room.

The next morning we were pleased with the buffet breakfast - certainly lots of choice and variety, from ham, cheese etc to cereals, yoghurt, fruit, fried/boiled eggs and bacon.

The hotel has basic facilities, a very small playground (which needs updating), a lovely pool, with decent sized kids pool as well, which our little boy lived in. However, we had specifically chosen the hotel because the website said it had a mini kids club....but this didn't exist, much to our sons disappointment. Especially as all the other children at the hotel were German, and so he found it very difficult to interact with them in everyday situations, such as in the pool. We had really hoped that , as an only child, he could mix with other children through organised activities.

We liked the rustic charm of the hotel, from the wooden furniture on the verandas (the only plastic chairs were a few around the pool) to the bamboo umbrellas and well-tendered gardens and lawns. It was certainly peaceful and a pleasure to spend the time in....as long as you stayed outside that is!! The interior reception and bar area is very dated and not very welcoming - all dark wood and old worn sofa's. Its a shame, as with a bit of a modern touch here and there, similar to the new bungalows, this hotel could easily nudge into a 4*. That is......if service came with a smile, which was rare!

The only thing I must mention again is that this is a German dominated resort, so if you are British, you feel pretty alienated. Even the posters advertising hotel events were written in German. We didn't meet ANY other British guests, in or out of the hotel. Its such a shame, as it really let the holiday down for us.
