We have just spent ten days at delightful Unguja Lodge, and would highly recommend it as a peaceful, relaxing holiday destination. Ralph and Eliese, the owner/managers, are excellent hosts and they and their staff (all unfailingly smiling, polite and friendly) make the guests feel most welcome – all of which all goes to create a very happy atmosphere. The hotel consists of only ten makuti-roofed "villas", each with a sea-view; and there is an airy, open dining area – where the food, mainly seafood, is very good indeed – and a beautiful swimming pool. There is free wifi in the dining/bar area. When the Lodge was built, care was taken to preserve the surrounding bush undisturbed, so it is full of monkeys, lizards and other forms of wildlife. The resort also has a Diving Centre where diving, snorkelling or dolphin-watching trips can be arranged (all charged separately, of course). The nearby beach is rather small (and non-existent when the tide comes in), but there is a larger, very beautiful one just around the corner. We hired a car for the duration of our visit to Zanzibar, and so were able to get around and see most of the rest of the island. Without the car, I feel we may have found ten days too much, especially as we are not into diving etc. As it is, we loved every minute of our time at Unguja Lodge.
Room Tip: There are family villas available.
