We have stayed at the Alpine on a number of Occasions Over the last two years whilst we searched and eventually bought a house in the region. We have found Robert and his family to be incredibly friendly and helpful. The food is really excellent value and the hotel has the basics of hot water, comfortable beds and cleanliness spot on. The restaurant punches above it's weight and has the most amazing wine selection. The hotel is located just outside the walled town and on Saturday morning you will be awoken by the sound of market traders setting up their stalls for the local market. It's worth getting up to buy some of the goods, especially shoes that are available.

My husband and I have stayed at the Alpino twice. Never having been to Barga, we chose this hotel simply on its "centre of the town" location, which proved to be the best decision as we were relying on public transport and did not want to stay outside the town.

The hotel has been in the same family for over 100 years. The owner and staff were very kind and helpful although there was a language problem in that we did not speak Italian...nor they English!

It has a good restaurant and wine cellar. We ate there twice but as the restaurant was quiet we decided to try other ones in the town which were livlier.

The rooms were simply furnished, ensuite, and extremely clean .... and it has a lift which makes life easier for the disabled or even for taking the luggage up to your room.

It's central position is wonderful, lots of little shops all around, cafe's bars & restaurants all within 5 minutes walk, bus stop is across the road and to get to the old walled town of Barga is less than ten minutes walk. The post office is across the square, as is the delicatessen belonging to the Caproni Brothers.......who are very helpful and knowledgable about almost everything you could ask.

There are regular buses to Lucca, the regional capital....or you can go from there to Florence, Pisa , Siena or Viareggio for the day. The nearest train station is Gallicano which is about a 10 minute taxi drive from Barga.

Its a great location if you want to get away from the main tourist areas and have a taste of the real Italy.

Hotel Alpino in the small town of Barga, Italy in Northern Tuscany (part of the region called Garfagnana) was a great little hotel. The room was nicely furnished with lots of wood, several windows, A/C, a skylight with an automatic shade, a tv, and a nice bathroom within the room. The bed was nice as well. In addition, the breakfast was superb and although we got half-board (breakfast and dinner), I would recommend not doing that since the dinner choices were not extensive and the food was ok, but dinner seemed rushed. We only stayed one night, but my wife and I were ready to leave. Despite using Italian as much as possible, we didn't feel welcome at all by the locals. This has nothing to do with the hotel, which was nice, but I thought it important to note. Also, keep in mind that this hotel has an elevator if you need it.
