My wife and I, seasoned independent travellers in our 60s, made a 3-1/2 week tour of western Turkey. Tours just don't go to Edirne, they regard it as too out-of-the-way. But it has one incredible sight (which I've wanted to visit since my first trip to Turkey 20+ years ago): the Selimiye mosque, Sinan's masterpiece. (There are some minor sights too: other mosques, covered bazaar -- enough to keep you occupied for an afternoon... we drove out from Istanbul in the morning and toured the city in the afternoon, stayed the night and went on.) Because westerners don't go to Edirne, there are no upscale, or even reasonably nice hotels, there. This hotel looked good on the web, but it was rather shabby (old furniture, cracks in the plaster, peeling paint on the outside). But it was clean, the bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked, and the Turkish-only breakfast perfectly adequate. We've stayed at a lot worse in our travels. For what you get, the hotel is way overpriced. They do have a parking arrangement for 2 Euros more. There were several other hotels on the same block that looked better on the outside -- we'd booked in advance -- but I can't say what they are like on the inside. If I went to Edirne again, I would probably try one of the others.
