“Nothing to complain about”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2011

I stayed in Luar at the beginning of June with my partner and our 3 year old daughter. We hired a car from Faro airport and drove up, although its quite far its really straight forward and we never got lost. The hotel advertised free onsite parking and this isnt the case. There is parking available outside the hotel which is free, it happened to be really busy when we arrived so we had to park across the road which wasn't ideal with a child and luggage but wasn't the end of the world. The lady that booked us in was very friendly and helpful. Our room was made up for only 2 people sharing and nothing for our daughter but she promised to get a small bed brought up whenever we wanted we opted for the morning as it was already late and it was brought up whilst we was at breakfast.
Breakfast was a bit dull but was ok.
I ordered a burger in the bar which tasted great, only to find a small green catapillar on my plate half way through the burger. They never charged me for that burger, but it put me off eatting salad for the rest of the holiday but we did eat from the bar again.
The pool area was nice and was never overly busy, so getting sunbeds was never a problem.
The beach and all the resturants are out the back of the hotel (the quickest way). The beach really is across the road and down quite a few steps but its beautiful. Further up the road the beach is better and you can get two sunloungers, umbrella for 10 euro's, the beach attendant was really friendly.
The room was ok, nothing exciting. It was clean and attended too every day with clean towels.
They also advertise money exchange, but we was told they don't provide this service when we tried to change money.
For a cheap, basic hotel its perfect.

“No frills, at the quieter end of town.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2011

The Luar is clearly a hotel that caters for peak season, package style tourism, with basic amenities, and a somewhat dated decor. However, if your holiday is about what's outside the room, rather than whats in it, then staying here will do you no harm at all. Rooms are clean, with a good powerful shower (although, hot water runs out quickly), and a small TV with CNN in English for those who need a background noise whilst getting ready for the morning/evening's events.
The breakfast is simple - a choice of bacon/eggs or continental. Cereals are also available. At night, the bar is open, with very friendly staff - we suspect that is was the owner and his daughters serving - and they have a good selection of drinks and cocktail knowledge to boot. The ubiquitous Super Bock lager was available on tap, and is the cheapest alcoholic beverage for sale behind the bar. It remains open until the last customer leaves, and there was no pressure to drink up and get out.
The pool was a good size, although I suspect that during peak season it would be considered small. There was a good range of seating in the outdoor area by the pool, as well as table service.
Location is very good, being at the quiet end of the 'strip', and finding the hotel is simplicity, just keep following the signs for Priaia de Rocha, and you'll eventually come across the hotel on the main road the the centre of the town.
My only real gripes centred around the noise level - minor noises could be heard clearly through wall, ceilings, and even the double glazed french doors. Not much you can really do about it, but if your a light sleeper such as myself, prepare to be woken constantly throughout the night by snoring neighbours and particularly vocal residents.
I would also strongly urge you to get a room that does not face the inner courtyard, primarily for your privacy (rooms look directly across at each other), and again, noise.
This is not a bad hotel, indeed, I've stayed in considerably worse. As always, don't expect Hilton standards when paying Campanile prices and you'll be happy in this hotel.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the sea, but on the outside!

“great location”

Hotel Luar is in a great location, almost on the beach & right next to the main strip.
The Hotel was very clean as was the pool area.
The rooms were a decent size and were spotless, and the beds were comfortable and the balcony was also a good size. The views (either sea or over the gardens) were both great.
We were bed and breakfast, the breakfast was average and there was plenty of it.
There is plenty of restaurants and bars around the hotel.
I would definatley return to praia da rocha and would return to Hotel Luar.

“Great hotel, Great area”

Luar is situated perfectly on the beach in Praia da Rocha. Agreed it could do with some interior upgrading but everything is fine. Stayed out of season, so it was quiet but thats how i like it. Good size pool. Stunning restaurants nearby. I really don't have any criticisms at all!

“Fantastic hotel in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2010

After reading some of the reviews on this hotel I was a little worried. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel was really nice and while the halls and decor upstairs were a little outdated I couldn't fault the hotel.

The service was good, pool was great and location was fantastic. The only thing I thought was the prices at the poolside bar were a little expensive.

Would love to go back again and would not hesitate to reccomend the hotel to anyone.
