I found La Gazzara doing a Google search and was pleased with the back-and-forth assistance provided by Sharon, the owner's secretary, as well as the price and accommodations. La Gazzara looks just as it is pictured on the site - ancient but with a cool mix of countryside and modern. Though the vines and grass/wheat were tending toward brown (mid October and not a lot of rain this summer), it was still really picturesque with cypress trees, the surrounding vineyard of Castell'in Villa, and the rooms themselves - exposed brick in the shower (some rooms only have a tub...ask if you care), comfy duvets, and very Architectural Digest-inspired decor...gorgeous. The owner, a "princess" (really!) --- who runs a very tight ship and greeted us at breakfast each morning to chat and offer advice though we and another couple were the only guests there at the time --- recommended a great 3+ mile hike around the vineyard grounds and up to the property where she lives and the restaurant, Myths, is (we also had a private meal there that was delicious - let them cook for you but do ask about the menu as you sit down if anyone is picky --- we had carpaccio and pigeon, which surprised our friend...and we all LOVED the boar). There were initially some issues with our wifi connection...a little spotty and we needed email access for a wine tour we had booked (Wine Tour in Tuscany with Donatella...HIGHLY recommended)...but it got straightened out quickly. Enjoyed the hot tub (note - be sure it's up high enough when you arrive so you can enjoy it at night...we just assumed it would be hot the first night and ended up not being able to go in the day we arrived). Also has a beautiful heated pool and sauna that were great after a lot of driving to and walking around hilltowns. We really enjoyed the wine from the property and wanted to bring some home, but were shocked at the $35 PER BOTTLE SHIPPING price and had to settle for memories instead. One note: agriturisimos do not provide shampoo, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc...great towels, soap and hairdryer, but definitely pack toiletries. Also, CALL as you make your way to the B&B as agriturisimos are not staffed 24/7 - the owners come to set everything up, then for the most part, you're on your own. Overall, a quiet and beautiful "home base" for your wandering or relaxing!!
