“Private escape on a beautiful vineyard close to Siena.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

I found La Gazzara doing a Google search and was pleased with the back-and-forth assistance provided by Sharon, the owner's secretary, as well as the price and accommodations. La Gazzara looks just as it is pictured on the site - ancient but with a cool mix of countryside and modern. Though the vines and grass/wheat were tending toward brown (mid October and not a lot of rain this summer), it was still really picturesque with cypress trees, the surrounding vineyard of Castell'in Villa, and the rooms themselves - exposed brick in the shower (some rooms only have a tub...ask if you care), comfy duvets, and very Architectural Digest-inspired decor...gorgeous. The owner, a "princess" (really!) --- who runs a very tight ship and greeted us at breakfast each morning to chat and offer advice though we and another couple were the only guests there at the time --- recommended a great 3+ mile hike around the vineyard grounds and up to the property where she lives and the restaurant, Myths, is (we also had a private meal there that was delicious - let them cook for you but do ask about the menu as you sit down if anyone is picky --- we had carpaccio and pigeon, which surprised our friend...and we all LOVED the boar). There were initially some issues with our wifi connection...a little spotty and we needed email access for a wine tour we had booked (Wine Tour in Tuscany with Donatella...HIGHLY recommended)...but it got straightened out quickly. Enjoyed the hot tub (note - be sure it's up high enough when you arrive so you can enjoy it at night...we just assumed it would be hot the first night and ended up not being able to go in the day we arrived). Also has a beautiful heated pool and sauna that were great after a lot of driving to and walking around hilltowns. We really enjoyed the wine from the property and wanted to bring some home, but were shocked at the $35 PER BOTTLE SHIPPING price and had to settle for memories instead. One note: agriturisimos do not provide shampoo, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc...great towels, soap and hairdryer, but definitely pack toiletries. Also, CALL as you make your way to the B&B as agriturisimos are not staffed 24/7 - the owners come to set everything up, then for the most part, you're on your own. Overall, a quiet and beautiful "home base" for your wandering or relaxing!!

Room Tip: Ask Sharon if you want something specific from your room. Our room, Olivo, was gorgeous...the bed wa...

“A fantastic time..."”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2010

Although only 20 minutes from Siena, this is a peaceful paradise. We spent a week there in July this year and had a fantastic time. The rooms are simply furnished, but cleaned thoroughly each day (and in the summer make sure you ask for a room with air-conditioning as not all have this). However the highlight is the two swimming pools (one indoor, one outdoor), a sauna and Jacuzzi, plus a large communal lounge (with a selection of wine from Castell'in Villa's own vineyard – obviously at an extra cost).

Our hostess, Ilaria did everything possible to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Apart from serving breakfast every day on the terrace, she suggested and booked restaurants for the evening, made museum ticket reservations, and generally ensured our stay was a pleasure.

Although 'only' a Bed and Breakfast location the advantage is that each evening you can then visit many of the excellent local restaurants. Castell'in Villa's own restaurant, being one of the best in the area and definitely worth a visit.

If you have are looking for a base from which to explore Tuscany and the Chianti Region
you won't find a better place to stay than this.

“A wonderful Agriturismo tucked in the Tuscan hills”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

We spent 6 nights at the Gazzara Agristurismo, within the Castell'in Villa property, in June 2010. We originally had booked 3 nights but we liked it so much we finally decided to stay more.

La Gazzara is a beautiful old tuscan convent that has been restored and now has 17 rooms with all comfort. Some of them have a garden view and private garden terrace, some other have a wonderful view on the senese countryside. The property is tucked on a small hilltop, in between vineyards from the famous Castell’in Villa domain, and has gorgeous surroundings.
It is located around 15 km east from Siena.

Hospitality and service by Ilaria was top notch, and breakfast was of very good quality. The property has an outdoor and indoor pool, as well as Sauna, Hammam and Jacuzzi.
In the living-room with huge fireplace you have access to a selection of the property Chianti Classico and Super Tuscan wines.
Having dinner on the terrace with a wonderful view in the evening, watching sunset on the Siena towers, was pure delight.

The property’s own restaurant, located in the Castell’in Villa village, around 6 km from La Gazzara, serves a wonderful Contadina cuisine, making heavy use of the domain’s own goods (venison, hare, wild boar, pheasants, olive oil, vegetables, etc.)

We enjoyed our stay a lot and can only recommend it this little hidden gem.

“Castell'in Villa's La Gazzara is Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2006

Two years ago we stayed at La Gazzara, and just returned from our second visit- this time with friends- and were just as impressed as before. We felt such a connection with the B&B- they truly know the meaning of "hospitality" and customer service. The place itself is a converted 13th century abbey, updated with comfortable, elegant, high-end furnishings. It is immaculate and peaceful. The perfect blend of old world charm with modern amenities. We've stayed in a brick loft room both times. The beds are comfy, the place is quiet, and the view overlooking the countryside is beautiful and serene. It reminds you of all the post cards you have seen from Tuscany.

Off the courtyard are the common areas- a gorgeous living area, with a huge fireplace where we made a fire and drank wine several evenings. La Gazzara is owned by Castell'in Villa, an aclaimed winery in the Chianti region. At the B&B you can help yourself to their reserve or vintage wine selections at any time day or night, then just have it added to your bill.

The living area adjoins the breakfast room, where a very nice, traditional breakfast is served each morning and is included in the price of the room. In addition to cappucino, cereals, fruit and fresh bread is prosciutto, cheese, and eggs if you like. In the summer, you can enjoy your breakfast on the expansive terrace.

The B&B also has two pools- one outdoor, one in, along with a sauna and Jacuzzi. Everything is immaculate- you feel like you've fallen into a dream and are being treated like royalty.

Truly, the best thing about this place is the people, and the gracious way they treat their guests. In 2004, we visited Tuscany for our honeymoon and found a place online that turned out to be a real disappointment. By sheer luck, we ran into an American couple and started talking about lodging. They told us about La Gazzara, where they were staying, and how delighted they were with it. We rushed over there the next morning and continued the rest of our trip at this wonderful place. They make sure everything is taken care of. Gloria, who manages the B&B, serves breakfast, helps with whatever we needed in the room, and assists with restaurant reservations...anything she could do to help. She even provided suggestions for day trips, including maps and directions. Wow- what a help!

Was great to return in 2006 to see it was just as fantastic. We've told several friends about it, and they've stayed there, loved it, and recommended it to other friends. It's been rather unknown, but we know what a find it is!

The last thing to know is about their restaurant- also called Castell'in Villa. This place serves phenomenal dinners- perhaps the best we have ever eaten anywhere - and we are serious foodies. The best thing is to let their chef, Massimo, take care of you. No need to order off a menu- just let him handle it. We had 6 courses of pure bliss. Incredibly fresh and intriguing, prepared like it was for a photo shoot with increadable attention to detail and blending of flavors. We were delighted to accompany our meal with a 1971 Castell'in Villa Chianti Riserva then move to an outstanding 1997 Castell'inVilla Poggio Delle Rose Riserva -WOW! You cannot miss this restaurant- it is just too good.

If you are looking for the perfict blend of charm, taste, wine, atmosphere and service, this is the place to stay while in Tuscany.
