“Highway Motel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2009

Der Alpenhof is not a bad hotel, but it’s not a great hotel either. The first surprise -that you can’t find in the guide or the website- is that the hotel borders a very fast road, where cars routinely drive at speeds above 100km/h. Standard rooms (300euros/night) have no bath, but just a shower for lack of space. Opening the windows is not an option, the noise from the road is simply too loud. The room price doesn’t include breakfast.
Internet is free, satellite channels are numerous and well organized on the television.
The staff is very friendly, but has obviously been instructed by management to favor the regular local customers. The food is nice, but very salty.
I would not recommend this hotel to my friends.

“a pleasant short stay in a beautiful place”

The staff are delightful and the hotel is clean.

The decor is based on local styles and the rooms are comfortable: the balconies are private with their own seating.

Unusually, one can also see the kitchen which is also clean although the food itself was not up to the standards of more moderately priced meals we had in Munich.

The hotel is beautifully situated between two mountains, if a little close to quite a fast bit of road which is, however, quiet at night.

Not quite as lyrical as the first reviewer but a very pleasant short stay with charming people in a beautiful Bavarian village. One would be happy to return.

“A perfect stay !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2008

Spent three nights at Der Alpenhof in Bayrischzell. From check-in to check-out the experience was a pleasure. A beautifully appointed suite, wonderful staff and excellent food. Certainly a case of you get what you pay for if not a little extra. You will not be disappointed

  • Liked — Not just a place to sleep but part of the adventure.

“Der Alpenhof - a Wonderful Retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2006

We are a family of 4 travelling from the USA, with a 9 yr old and a 1 yr old. We had booked a junior suite, but upon arrival found out we had been upgraded to the Franz Josef suite, costing almost twice the money, for no extra charge! Service was fantastic. The employees were very friendly and attentive. Smiles and happy customer service are hard to come by sometimes in Germany, so this was a welcome change. The suite was huge and beautiful. Immediately upon our arrival we were treated to a tray of warm milk and cookies. The mini bar was well stocked and to our dismay we found out that it was included in the price of our room... We had assumed that it was like other hotels and that everything would be very expensive, so we didn't use anything... DARN!

There was a business lounge where you could check email and conduct any necessary correspondence.

All our requests were met with cheerful enthusiasm. The wellness area was just wonderful and the pool was fantastic. The breakfast buffet was extensive and very good.

My only complaint was that dinner in the restaurant left a LOT to be desired. While presentation was wonderful and service equally good, the food itself was just not good at all. The steak was very tough, and the side dishes were not very appealing. There seemed to be just too much emphasis on presentation than on food quality.

Still, I would gladly stay at the Alpenhof again. It is easy enough to find a local joint that serves good old fashioned meals.

“Fantastic service and scenery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2006

Der Alpenhof is situated in a tiny village on the edge of the Alps. The service is consistently outstanding, whether from reception, restaurant or spa staff. We stayed for a week and were lucky with the weather, if it is grey and drizzly it is likely to put a downer on your holiday but with dry weather you are guaranteed to have a great time.
The hotel has a great location, you can walk out of the door and straight into the Alps. The hotel will hire you bikes (just eight euros a day) if you want to travel a little further afield.
Unless you are willing to drive you are limited to the hotel for evening meals but fortunately they do a set menu which changes daily which in my view merits a Michelin star. It really is a fantastic menu, full of taste, and as far as we could tell largely sourced from local, fresh produce.
There is a spa area which includes a sizeable gym, and treatments can be booked as you choose during your stay.
The standard rooms are rather small, but are kitted out well, free internet access and complimentary water and fruit. The bathrooms are a delight, again, small but with great showers and beautifully decorated.
The one negative comment I can make is that the bed was rather small and rather hard. Fortunately we were so exhausted from the walks in the Alps we tended to sleep regardless. Aside from this Der Alpenhof is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. A real delight.
