“Perfect hideaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

It`s a lovely little place. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The owners are one of the nicest and most helpfull people you`ll meet. A bit remote, but never the less perfect spot for a romantic trip away from the city. If you`re crazy enough you can hire a bicycle for a day and go exploring the area. The only downfall was lack of restaurant. Though breakfast and coffee in the morning was excellent :o)

“Great Hidden Gem Near Florence”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2009

My wife and I stayed 4 nights at the Villa La Malva, at the edge of the tiny village of Malva. The site is idyllic, the hotel new and cozy, and the owners delightful and helpful. Owners Gabriel and Kristine are making a name for themselves with this quiet, and quite cozy hotel. The rooms are comfortable, if a bit on the smaller side, the morning breakfasts a standard Italian cuisine of coffee, pastries, prosciutto and cheeses, and juice, and very fresh and tasty. The evening meal is served every other evening, prepared by Gabriel's mother and his sister, both fine chefs. We gorged ourselves on the succulent pasta and DOC-quality, local Carmignano red wine (the best we tasted this trip to Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Sorrento.) The restaurant is not large, but is quiet, romantic, quite delightful, and the other guests were a treat to meet and talk with. Kristine went out of her way to help us find our way around, although needing to charge us 12 Euros for taking us to and from the local train station in Signe, a 2.4 mile trip. Better that than the local taxi who charged us 20 Euros each trip! Not an easy walk or we would have done it more. This was the only downpoint for our stay, as our original 3 nights stretched to 4 as we enjoyed our time at the hotel. Nearby Florence was a 12-15 minute train ride from little Signe.
Best gelato we tasted this trip (our second to Italy) was at the store by the train station in Signe, and the Cherry was out of this world, fresh cherries! We give two thumbs up to Villa La Malva and the owners Gabriel and Kristine! Thank you for a memorable hotel stay! We would recommend this hotel to any who want great service, cozy rooms, beautiful surroundings, and wonderful food and wine.

“A great find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2009

We stayed here for a night earlier this week. The hotel sign is easily missed and the access is not easy if there is traffic on the road, but once you arrive, this is a great place.
As reported by other reviwers, Kristina could not be more helpful.
The bedrooms are comfortable and well appointed and the bar/breakfast area bright and welcoming.
The owners are currently constructing a restaurant on ground floor level. This is planned to open in March/April.
Give it a try...you won't be disappointed!

“Lovely place but be aware of the location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2008

The best way to describe this property is to say it's a wonderful modern villa in a small village in the middle of nowhere in Tuscany. You will need a good map to find it and even then it can be a problem.

The villa is completely renovated, fitted to the highest standard, with some charming old furniture to match the feel of the area. Rooms are clean and spacious with a good sized bathroom. Ours had a balcony with a view of the Arno valley.

I know some people want the authenticity in where they stay and this isn't an 18th century building, but I prefer an air conditioned room, clean toilet and hot running water!

The family that run the property are all very friendly and have been great hosts and they all spoke english. We had a few problems during our stay and the way they handled them was so pleasant and efficient that you wouldn't get better in a luxury hotel.

Breakfast is served on a large terrace on the top floor with lovely views, and you can enjoy a few quiet drinks there at the evening too. The choice and the quality of the food served for breakfast was better than what we got in the 4-star hotel we stayed in just before coming here, so really I cannot praise the service you get here enough.

There is only one bad thing about this place, and that is the location. If you are driving, and I assume you will be because there is no other way to reach the villa, you will have to face treacherous roads every time you head out or come back. There's also nowhere to go out for a meal or do anything in the village, so you will have to drive for everything. The closest restaurant is some 2-3km away in a charming village of Artimino, but it is reached by bendy, narrow roads, barely wide enough to fit one car.

Having said that, we have used this place as our base to see Tuscany and have travelled a lot. You will get used to it after a while, but the driving in and our certainly won't be relaxing. An evening drink on the terrace is a must after surviving the journey!

“Kristina's wonderful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2007

Kristina, owner of the property, was wonderful! she really made our stay in tuscany great! we were arriving by rental car and got lost not to far from the villa. we called Kristina and I was thrilled to hear here perfect english on the other end of the line. she recognized the name of the street we were on and told us how to get to her place from there! we had reserved the deluxe room with a private balcony. the room was furnished with beautiful antiques. this hotel is brand new - but, built to look/feel like an old tuscan villa and it was the perfect blend of old world feel and modern convenience - however, I do have to admit that they skimped on the soundproofing. Our first morning, we were greeted by a lovely and filling breakfast spread. we planned to go into florence and Kristina helped with information on the train schedules, where to buy tickets (since it was a holiday), maps to the train station and of florence - she was a wonderful help. that night, we ended up eating dinner at enrico's (right by the train station). It looked like a dive from the outside, but we figured they would probably have decent pizza. turned out to be a great little family run eatery filled with locals. food was wonderful! the following day, Kristina gave us tips on how to drive up to artimino and then over to Pisa and Livorno. Pisa was a waste of time, but Livorno was amazing. No tourists around, and the weather was unseasonably warm. we enjoyed the afternoon walking along the mediterranean sea and eating seafood at a lovely outdoor cafe. that night we ended up back at enrico's for dinner. If you are going to stay here, make sure you are comfortable driving in the hills and that you make some choices about where to eat and how to get there BEFORE it gets dark. after it gets dark, it's easy to get lost. a 5km drive sounds close, but it's not! the only other downside of this location was... well, the location. it's built in a town with lots of other houses around - not alone in the middle of grape fields like I was expecting. I'd definately recommend this hotel and will be back someday!
