“Wonderful, stayed in Il Poggio”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2010

I stayed at Tenuta Lupinari in May 2010 in the house Il Poggio, with my wife and daughter, parents, sister and brother in law. We had a wonderful time: the grounds are beautiful, the family (sisters Antonella and Marianna) were very friendly and helpful, the location is good (bit off the main road, but that does make it very quiet), and the rented house was perfect.
Il Poggio has 2 doubles and a twin, each with their own bathroom, big enough to fit in an extra baby bed, a common living area, and kitchen. I'll include pictures in this review. We ate out most of the time (and at the house a few times), but also dined here one night, which is good and the food is accompanied by Lupinari's own wine. The private tiled garden in the back runs into into a grassy area with olive trees. There is also a large shared pool with sun chairs. The larger cities Florence, Siena, and Arezzo are within easy reach (<1 hr by car). Other smaller highlights are also interesting and within reach, for example Greve in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, San Gusme, San Gimignano, and Castello di Brolio. I don't believe you can go wrong with booking this, and recommend it! Thanks Antonella and Marianna!

“one of those places that you're inclined to keep a secret”

We have stayed at Tenuta Lupinari for a week the past two summers. For our family it’s provided the space and comfort of a private house/villa, with the added benefit of having within walking distance a great staff, pleasant breakfast and probably the best restaurant dinner meal of all our European travels.
The apartment was huge, and so comfortable. It had that Italian rustic feel which I love, and all of the comforts and amenities of home.

Things that brought us back for our second stay included: 1) we sleep really well there; 2) the views are stunning; 3) the pool is clean, clear, cool (and not overly chlorinated), which is a big plus during the warm months of the year.
It’s actually been our favorite place to have dinner our past 2 trips to Europe. The dining area faces east across the Ambra Valley and the views as the sun goes down are georgeous. The 4 courses are tasty – AND, when we quickly consumed our second course (we had been hiking all day), they brought out another serving of it. Wonderful service in a beautiful, informal atmosphere.
Chianti is right outside your front door and side trips to Florence and Siena are easy to make. Breakfasts offered multiple filling options and it was hard to beat sitting out on the porch looking out over the rollings hills.
We researched MANY different properties throughout Tuscany and cannot imagine anywhere else we would have rather spent our days is in this beautiful part of Italy
Food is delicious and the people are warm and welcoming. The two girls who were our hosts couldn't do enough for us. They both went out of their way to help us in every way possible.
The quality of the accomodations and the food exceeded our expectations (and we are well seasoned travellers). And it was by far the best value of anywhere we stayed on our tour of Italy. re inclined to keep a secret.

“Lupinari home away from home”

I will start off by saying that I am a travel agent who specializes in custom vacations to Italy. I have been to Italy over 20 times and of those 20 visits I have stayed in Tuscany 10 or more times. I have stayed in bed and breakfast, rented houses and apartments every time and nothing compares to Luinari. I read the last review about being dirty and unfriendly and was SHOCKED. I have personally stayed here 5 times and have sent clients here numerous times and NEVER did I or my clients have anything but praise for this property. The owner and his daughters could not be any nicer to people. Their staff is the daughters and their cousin and they will do anything for you and to hear that they yelled at a client is unbelievable to me. Check out all the other reviews and chalk this one up to one negative person.

I rented Apt. Torre June 10th to June 17th and it was very spacious, very clean, and everyday they came in and cleaned the apartment. I ate dinner as they offer a 4 course meal with wine and apertifs for 35 Euro and it is great homecooking. Angela does an amazing job cooking and remember this is Tuscany and the meals are simple usually a pasta dish and pork as an entre. Every region has a different cusine so please remember where you are and enjoy the fresh pasta and roasted rosemary potatoes and delicious pork. Angela's tiramisou is the best and I don't normally even eat tiramisou.

I was in Lupinarai last September as well and my husband spent time picking graprs and watching how the machine de stems them. Mr Pelligrino was there and he explained some of how the grapes are harvested to him and it was the best vacation ever for my husband. He loves wine and being able to be a part of the harvest was always a dream for him.

I love the Pelligino family (the owners) Antonella and Marianna are the best and their cousin Valeria is a joy to talk with. Every morning you can see Mr. Pelligrino come in for coffee and then go down to check with the crew about his vineyards, this is what Tuscany is all about. Being at Lupinari is like a home away from home and I have nothing but praise to this family for the outstanding job that they do with this property as well as the special care they give to their clients. God willing I willbe back there again next year.

“Dirt and extreme unfriendly hosts. Noisy in the evening.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2009

We stayed 3 nights in an apartment with terrace.

• Kitchen and bath were not clean at all. The fridge was full of spots and stains, we took dirty cups and dishes out of the cupboard, the bathroom-facilities are old and filthy, we had hairs in the toothbrush-holder.

• As the terrace of our neighbours was quite close all the idyllic tuscan nights were filled with loud voices from our neighbours next door. We had no other choice then to leave the place and eat outside.

• The worst thing of all was the unfriendliness of the owners. When I showed them the mold (!) in the cup I had taken out of the cupboard something incredible happened: The owner (one of the daughters) started yelling at me, the guest. She shouted, what an unthankful guest I would be, and that I should be grateful to be in this place (instead of asking for cleanliness …).

We do not recommend this place!

“Beautiful, special, wonderful Lupinari - we miss you!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2009

My husband and I chose to get married at Tenuta di Lupinari in August 2008, and we secured the rental of the entire village for the week of our wedding. We were joined by our family and friends for the most amazing and wonderful week, everyone without exception fell in love with Lupinari and we had a perfect stay and a perfect wedding day. Our wedding photographers (who live in Italy) were blown away by the location and the beautiful buildings and gardens, and declared it one of the loveliest wedding spots they had visited.
Tenuta di Lupinari is owned by the Pellegrino family, who have lovingly renovated the buildings over the years with a labour of love, and still manage the property all year road. The grounds are impeccably maintained with beautiful gardens and flowers. The pool area is spotlessly clean and so quiet and peaceful, with views across the valley.
Antonella Pellegrino was our wedding planner, and she was on hand all week and did everything possible to accommodate our many requests and our over excitable guests. She got married herself at Lupinari, which says a lot about the perfection of the place!
The reception is open during set hours during the day, and happy to provide you with restaurant bookings, day trips, help with car hire, bike hire, spa bookings, supermarket directions, post or fax or literally just about anything you need or want.
As you approach the Lupinari village on a long cypress lined road, you can see the tower of the castle in the distance. It is very quiet as you drive past the vineyards and the old farm buildings at the bottom of the estate. The Pellegrino family still make their own wine and there is a fishing lake on the estate too.
Arriving in the little car park, you are immediately struck by the peace and the quiet & the feeling of immediate relaxation. Being completely set in its own grounds, there is no traffic noise for miles around (of course, you need a car to be here as it is not possible to easily walk to nearby village or restaurants).
The apartments at Lupinari used to be the servants/farm workers accommodation adjoined to the castle in years gone by, and are now beautifully and sympathetically renovated. As other reviewers pointed out, this means that some apartments have shared bathrooms (so more suited to families) but just check the apartment details before booking your selected our apartment. My husband and I stayed at La Loghetta which is set back, very private and a lovely terrace. We visited each apartment (obviously, as all our friends and family were living in them!) and they each have individual charm and appeal depending on your needs. The style is rustic and authentic Italy, spotlessly clean and well maintained and with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Each apartment has its own terrace with seating area. Some terraces are more private than others - so make sure you ask if this is something important to you. La Terrazza is a fantastic apartment for friends sharing, with 2 huge living areas and a massive terrace with elevated views. La Belvedere is beautiful with a huge ground floor terrace area and garden (but one bathroom, as another reviewer pointed out). La Granaio is our favourite apartment for 2 sharing, with a gorgeous beamed bedroom and quiet sitting terrace overlooking the pool.
Within the reception building there are B&B rooms, which are spacious and beautifully appointed. On most nights of the week, Lupinari provides the option of a set menu dinner at fixed price, which was welcome for many guests who didn't fancy cooking in their apartment and the food is lovely and wine is provided. Its not "mind blowingly fantastic" but at the price you are not expecting it to be! Sitting out on the terrace with candles and smelling the flowers & a slight breeze in the air with no sound for miles around...absolutely bliss.
The castle area itself is still owned and lived in by the family, although we believe there may be plans to turn it into further B&B rooms. The nearby town of Bucine has everything you need in terms of banks, supermarket, pharmacy, bakery, although it is not a "pretty" Italian town in the way Montepulciano or San Gimignano would be described. It is a functioning Italian town with a lot of heart and body. But you are in a very central location here for reaching a zillion beautiful locations in Tuscany and Umbria, yet away from the super-touristy areas which often put you near busy auto strada links and main roads. We loved and adored Lupinari for the very fact that it is off the beaten track and like a perfect oasis.
Sigh...I could go on for hours. I have attached photos including some of our wedding day, but even the photos don't do justice. In case you were left in any doubt....we highly, highly recommend Lupinari for a relaxing, beautiful, quiet and authentic Italian stay. Ideal for couples and families and groups of friends alike. Enough room on the estate to find your own space and enjoy the peace and quiet. Close enough to all major attractions to allow easy day tripping. Perfect and unobtrusive service for anything you need. Great comms and easy booking, excellent value prices for rental.
Please message me through TA if you have any questions, very happy to be honest and help as I know how stressful it is when searching for the perfect place for your Italian vacation.
Big thank you to Antonella and Salome, and to the Pellegrino family. We had a perfect stay and a wedding we shall treasure forever. R&R xx
