“Charming hotel with old world style and, thankfully, free of pretensions.”

I have to admit when I was looking for a hotel to stay for my friend's wedding I thought twice about booking. If you want 5 star all the way then stay at Villa Grazioli but if you want a place where you can relax by the pool as well as use as a great base for Rome then go ahead and book. The staff were friendly and really helpful - a special mention to the manageress who booked everything from taxis to manicures! I hear they are refurbing some of the hotel but hope they don't change too much as the old world decor is part of its charm.

“A HORRIBLE PLACE ! UN ALBERGO DISASTROSO !”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

First, they tried to rip me off with the hotel room rate saying that there was only one room available. This was not true as I then booked via Expedia and there were plenty of rooms left for USD 86 ! The hotel is tired looking. We wanted to have lunch outside but the waiter prepared us a table inside ( we could not even choose a table inside even though the place was empty !) as he said, he was alone and could not serve outside. By the way, we were the only people in the restaurant. Starters must have been grilled in a dirty oven as they tasted horrible. The pasta dish was fine but you can do much wrong with that simple dish. I asked if they supply towels for the pool and they told me that I can pick those up in my way to the pool.Unfortunately, they did not tell me that they came at a cost of Euro 2 each and I only found out about that on my bill at check out. I asked for a taxi to Fiumicino airport and the ladu at the reception gave me a rate of Euro 70. Since I have been traveling a lot to Rome and the Castelli Romani area, I knew that this rate was certainly too much. Be careful: IF YOU ARE A COUPLE OR SMALL FAMILY YOU SHOULD NOT PAY MORE THAN EURO 50 TO FIUMICINO AIRPORT FROM GROTTAFERRATA OR FRASCATI. The hotel receptionist just wanted to get some Euro 20 extra ! And by the way, from the historical centre in Rome to Fiumicino airport a taxi can chanrge you only Euro 40. SO PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THEY DO NOT RIP YOU OFF !
The pool was full of algea so if you care for your health, AVOID !There are few hotels in Grottaferrata or Frascati but PLEASE AVOID THE GRAND HOTEL VILLA FIORIO. This hotel need a new management and owner !!

Non raccomando questo albergo a nessuno !

“A hotel that knows it doesn't deliver”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2008

Villa Fiorio is described on several travel websites, and reiterates the same amenities on its own site. However we saw few of the "standard" service offerings. We had a view of a blank wall and metal flue, with odd fumes on occasion. No air conditioning, no bathrobes, no internet connection, no safe and no room service. The writing table was so unstable that it was not possible to stand a drink on it never mind write. The loo seat did not fit; the sink and bath plugs were both broken; it was impossible to use the shower and we had to take baths; the light over the sink did not work. The plugs and light were repaired the next day, but I don't see how the previous occupants had got on with no operational plugs to anything! They clearly knew that our loo seat did not fit as it was replaced 4 days into our stay. The bedspread had a huge burn hole which badly needed repairing; the net curtains were grey with dirt and hanging off the rail.

Lunch was clearly advertised as being served from 12:30 to 14:30. We arrive at 14:05 and were informed that they had just closed. I had one evening meal in the restaurant (a main course only) and was badly disappointed as it was far too salty, served on a cold plate, and I had to wait for cutlery to be supplied although it had taken 25 minutes to arrive and there were only 3 of us in the restaurant. It was 24 Euros for the dish and a bottle of water. However the buffet breakfasts were entirely adequate.

The hotel is over 1 Km out of Frascati and a one-way taxi fare was between 12 and 15 Euros depending on time of day and type of taxi. Unless you wish to walk it, this needs factoring in to your budget. It took us 25-30 minutes to walk between the hotel and the railway station (the hotel is on a hill above the town of Frascati).

The staff were all very friendly, however, the antiques that the hotel was proud to mention are not maintained and largely covered in dust. The clocks did not work.

The garden surrounded the villa, but was nowhere near as extensive as promised and there was nowhere to relax outside as the seats were all white-wire chairs and tables. The loungers were all packed away and shut up.

This is a 4* hotel, but our experience is that the reality did not match the image projected on their website. As we were charged at the top rate for a room with absolutely no view and no amenities, and general meanness in service elsewhere, we feel "ripped off" and will not stay there again although we visit Frascati fairly regularly. We would advise others to check their expectations of views and service against what is delivered.

“Quiet and idillic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2008

Stayed here for 6 days in July 07 and had a wonderful time. Started badly as we took a taxi from the airport in Rome because the car hire company we had booked with did not have our booking. The taxi journey cost 140 euros and the taxi driver tried to rip us off to the tune of 50 euros!! However, we got it all sorted and received a full refund on our car hire which was in excess of the taxi fare as well as use of a car for the rest of the week!

Tip - air conditioning units look like radiators beneath the window sills so if you arrive at night with curtains drawn, you can be forgiven for not finding it - as we found out on the first hot sweaty night!!!

Hotel is small and peaceful. Pool is lovely and staff are great. Food is really good. A 25 minute walk sees you in the town of Frascati where there are a range of restaurants and activities. Ideal for couples, not so good for children!

Train service to Rome is excellent and very cheap.

All-in-all - would definitely go back there again - this is a hotel away from the rat race!

  • Liked — It's location and size
  • Disliked — a little bit remote, but on the whole didn't bother us

“Boring and tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2007

This was one of the strangest hotels I have ever stayed at. Too far from the station if you are doing Rome all day, though I was in Frascati on business and couldn't stay at the Flora. The 20 mins walk into Frascati is preferable to a 12 euro taxi fare, and ought to be very pleasant in the summer. I was staying in one of the outbuildings, and this felt fairly isolated. In fact, despite spending much of my mornings in the lobby trying to get a wireless signal, the staff never spoke to me at all in four days.

The fading grandeur of the place is fine if you like that sort of thing, but this is certainly overrated at 4 stars. Breakfast is hopeless, but that is true everywhere in Italy, and the sooner someone opens a greasy spoon the better. You can ask for a cappuccino, but it won't be offered. Grounds look nice, and the pool is quite big, but it was too cold when I was there to walk about too much. There is a supermarket only a few minutes walk up the road to the side of the entrance. The restaurant looked overpriced, and not tempting, so I ate in Frascati every night where there are quite a few choices of places to eat.

This hotel looks tired and faded. They need to try and capitalise on what is in the local area, which is actually quite a bit, rather than sell it as an alternative to staying in Rome (it isn't, and if you try it, don't blame me when Rome's crippling footpaths leave you too leg weary to walk from the station). Best avoided if you can, until you hear it is under new management.
