I come from Cyprus, and with a friend we arrived at the Karellion Hotel during our Greece visit for the Acropolis Rally. We liked the location and the hotel looked very quaint on the outside so our spirits were up.
However, the creepy managers were our first clue that not all was as it seemed on the outside. The reception area was alright, but very dark, because the older manager was sitting in the main sofa watching TV and smoking a pipe all day long - I am not kidding. All day and all night if his shift allowed. He made weird comments and often tried to be polite and engage us in conversation as soon as he realised we were Cypriot, female, and could speak the language (his English was terrible), but there was a weird kind of ickiness on his comments. Ugh.
The room was not what we expected. It was clean, no complaints on hygiene, but it was dated, with horrible furnishings and some things which were mind boggling, like for example the nice combination of a small table, an empty mini fridge and a small TV set on top of it (!). The TV wouldn't receive more than a couple of channels.
The door would not lock automatically and we had to lock and unlock it whenever we wished to sleep or leave the room. Also, it wasn't a real door! It looked like a balcony door and if someone outside waited long enough then they were bound to see you walking into the windowless bathroom, as you had to literally step next to it to enter. So from the bed to the bathroom required you to be fully dressed. Nice! The unusual door design also meant there was no sound insulation, and we could hear everyone around the hotel.
However, I must be fair and mention the bed, which was divine - one of the best I've slept on. At least now we know where the room refurbishment budget was spent!
When downstairs, we tried ordering coffee with milk and even stressed the words "fresh milk" countless times. Instead of a frape, we got a weird canned milk sugary coffee substance. Yuck.
On checkout, the creepy manager "accidentally" overcharged my visa for an extra night, and then didn't know how to refund. In the end I resigned to receiving the difference in cost in cash, which took ages even if we were in a hurry to check out and catch our flight. He seemed quite upset that we demanded the extra charge back and wasn't so smiley anymore.
Not very representative of Greece hospitality, I'd say!
