We chose Hotel Foehrenhof based on a recommendation by a co-worker. She was right, the place is wonderful! We were welcomed by Michael (the owner and chef) when we arrived and treated to the afternoon cakes and coffee. The staff are some of the friendliest people we've ever met. They were happy to give suggestions and always welcoming. The first night, Michael suggested we walk a couple of blocks to the local auditorium where the local Bavarian band was giving a free concert. What a treat! Our first night in Bavaria and we get to have a beer with the locals while listening to their town band give a concert.
The breakfasts were always wonderful - a selection of meats, cheeses, breads, cereals, and fruit. They also always had a local specialty - during our 5 night stay they had meatballs, cordon bleu, and weiner schnitzel. All were very tasty. And the cakes in the afternoon are to die for.
The rooms were nice. My parents also travelled with us, so we had two rooms. Our room had a very nice balcony overlooking the Alps. My parents room didn't have a balcony, but got a nice cool afternoon breeze and had a slightly larger table area. Both rooms were ensuite and had flat panel TV and a table/sitting area. The decor is of Bavarian pine and is welcoming.
The staff had suggestions for dinner that were perfect. They suggested Antoni Stuberl in Farchant (very tasty!!) and Husar in neighboring Garmisch. We loved Husar so much we tried to go back a second time but found them fully booked.
Farchant is a nice little town in a perfect location. We used it as a base for Bavarian sightseeing - a little over an hour to Munich for Oktoberfest, about an hour to Neuschwanstein, 15-20 minutes from Zugspitze, and much much more.
All in all, Hotel Foehrenhof was a great stay, and we will definitely return. We felt at home there and wish we could have stayed longer. Each day we found more and more reasons to love the area.
