The ad from the Croatian tourist board:"The Medeterranian Sea, as it used to be" is not exaggerated, but exactly to the point, when talking Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Bay, south of Dubrovnik itself.
While Dobrovnik probably needs no further introduction, Dubrovnik Bay certainly may. Just go there, the sooner the better, development will not wait for you. The area is not yet built up and is precisely like the Mediterrainain in the old days. If you stay at Plat Villas apartments or the Orphee Hotel in the same Plat complex, you will most probably be satisfied. The Plat complex is quiet, with several pleasant beaches within close reach. Tourist boats will take you to and from Dubrovnik and to and from other interesting towns like Cavtat and Mlini. Good restaurants in every town, fish and seafood prepared with respect.
Yes the airport is quite close, good, not really disturbing in Plat, but fine view of descending and ascending planes, yes.
And the local people: very welcoming, kind and English speaking, but not the kind to be kicked around, and why should you...
The Dubrovnik Bay area suffered unbelievable destruction during the attack on Dubrovnik in the early 90´s. Because almost everything has been restored since then, you´ll not notice the damage of the shelling immediately, but once you do, it will ad further to your travelling experience.
