“the resort that dies in winter”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Having just been on a holiday- to the hotel Magalan in La Manga , I must say it was the worst winter holiday my wife and i have ever had.The hotel only had 37 saga guests staying of which I and my wife were included. We did have a good repartee with the other guests as, being so few of us we saw a lot of each other. Also staying were maybe six spanish people at any one time. With the result the hotel was dead. The rep tried her hardest to help by building up the resort, but when you only have one hotel open in a big resort in winter no matter how much she tried, she was on to a loser as nowhere was open. So no one dare walk out at night or day if they wanted to spend a penny or have a coffee or a beer as nowhere was open.
The entertainment was sparse and one night I did a talk about my career in baking and catering. We also resorted to a "Beetle Drive"
There is no promenade as such so unless are good at walking along the sand you have to walk along the main road. No worry about traffic as there wasn't any, also no people walking about.
The inclusive trips were quite good, enjoyed the one to a market, although this was almost the same distance away as the airport at Alicante.

As we were about to get on the coach to return home other guests were asking me if i would change places with them as they were there for a month and we were just there for a week. My case rests summer yes winter no.

Room Tip: Do not go in winter. Saga rooms are at the front of the hotel, you do get a sea view of the Med but...

“No where to go”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

My husband & I went to the Mangalan hotel last May 2011. The hotel was very clean. the staff were very helpful. It was down hill from there. We only had potatoes and veg once in two weeks, Thin chips were available if you like that sort of thing. The bar was no more than a cafe or canteen. The dance area was a conservatory with patio chairs & tables. entertainment was twin men with a key board. One was singing the other playing. We did enjoy the music as they played mostly the 60s music and their was pretty good too. The area is poor, no where to go we walked for an hour, never saw a bus or a cafe/bar. Busses should run every 3/4 hour.
I think if you are planning to go there, hire a car or some other sort of transport. We were very bored and we were very dissapointed with the holiday.

Room Tip: Choose the Ma menor side, as the street side view can be obstructed

“Nice hotel but”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

This hotel is really lovely and the staff great. Only problem is the sound proofing of the bedrooms.
One could hear the people in the next room showing, flushing the toilets, snoring etc
Lost a lot of sleep. also the door slam and make such a noise.
The location is not good if it is out of saeson as most of the shops etc are closed and you need to catch a bus to get anywhere

Room Tip: Do not know as most of the rooms were noisy according to other quests

Booked in late one night when the raised bridge further up the strip broke down and left us stranded from our holiday apartment. We'd been waiting for hours until we gave up on the bridge getting fixed (we had our three over tired tots in the back of of the car). Hotel mangalan was our salvation! They gave us a discounted rate for adjoined twin rooms and then let us have the use of the pool all day the next day (in mid October it was basically our own private pool) Charming service, unlike other reviewers, I did not feel discriminated against because I was English, ( I think it might more likely be an issue the hotel staff have with finickity SAGA customers! ) it's a gem of a place on an otherwise overdeveloped stretch of Spanish coastline. My kids are insistent we return for a full week next year!!!

“We enjoyed it and would go back however it can be noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

Good hotel, enjoyed the breakfast large variety of food freshly cooked eggs and hot food.
Balconies whilst a good size they lack privacy completly and could be improved.
views were spectacular of both the mar menor and the sea.
Very friendly welcoming staff no problems, the mini bar was empty but we were told everything was available on request together with a room service charge which made two coffee's cost 9 euros. Spa prices also appeared to be very expensive but we did not have the time to use them so can not comment.
Generally a good hotel but there is noise from other rooms and it must be very noisy in July and August one feels.
We parked on the street for free with no problems
