Walking into the Alvor Praia you definitely feel that you have walked into a 5 star hotel, especially when you have been driven past a number of it's inferior neighbours.
I really liked the grand marble entrance, the porter who helped me with the luggage and the friendly welcoming staff at the reception desk. Although I did wonder if the porter was looking for a tip, which he never got cause I'd just arrived and didn't have any cash.
I liked how this hotel is built into the cliff face, so it hides it's bulk in a much more natural way, given this is a hotel of some years, it was clearly ahead of its time.
From reading other reviews this hotel has been recently re-furbished. I'm happy to report that the interior is fresh and attractive looking, so the interior design has clearly been successful.
What I liked:
Free room safe
Free wi-fi (in the bar and reception area only)
Grand hotel appearance
Great hotel setting
Very helpful reception staff (they'll book taxi's and restaurants for you)
Great breakfast (with a wee man playing a grand piano)
Lift to the beach
Indoor pool, gym and sauna (for those days when the weather isn't so good)
What I didn't like
Overpriced pool bar (4 euro for a 40 cent bottle of water)
Tiny cola bottles (at 3.20 each)
Uncomfortable sun loungers
Towel booking of the sun loungers
The hotel is 20 minutes walk to Alvor, without any decent pavements
The maid cleaning service wasn't as good as I would have liked
Evening meal in the hotel is a self service buffet (I never ate there)
Somewhat boring evening entertainment (different act every night, playing the same type of music)
Would I recommend this hotel.
Yes! This is a 5 star hotel, that's not to say it's perfect, but it's faults do not really get in the way of enjoying this little bit of luxury.
My own personal question about this hotel is sea view or garden view. I paid for a superior garden view, which was the same price (at time of booking) as a sea view room. I did consider upgrading to a sea view when I arrived at the hotel, but having looked at the sea view rooms, which are a lot smaller I decided to stay put.
As a footnote, I'm afraid I have to report that there was some sun lounger towel booking going on. It would appear to be the older generation (but not limited to them) who do this and contrary to the racist stereotype perceived by many, it is not just the Germans who follow this shameful practice. This is ignorant behaviour of the highest order and should not been allowed. Regularly by 10am all the “best” sun bathing spots on the pool would be gone. I saw one family who booked out 5 sun loungers for a whole day, then only used 2 of them at 5pm for a short spell by the pool. Sorry, rant over.
