“Spotty service. Otherwise good.”
De Roskam bills itself as a 4-star hotel, and indeed it has a few things going for it. It is situated beautifully in the countryside (next to a fairly busy road however), with a warmly modern bar and restaurant, clean rooms, decent food and friendly personel.
Not so bad it seems.
However, it took forever to check in, and then we tried to get a drink in the bar. The tables were sticky, dirty glasses everywhere and I ended up slipping behind the bar to find a rag to clean our tables with. A gentleman eventually showed up and confirmed when asked that he would come to take our orders and then left...and never came back. In the end the lady from the check-in desk made our drinks, she was friendly but obviously very inexperienced.
We mentioned this at the restaurant and got a "what goes on at the hotel is not our problem" type reply.
We had made our reservation for the restaurant at 6:30 with explicit mention of the two young children in our group who are used to eating early, and go to bed early. After asking a few times the appetizer for the adults arrived at 8 o'clock...The main dish arrived at 8:30 and only after that the food for the children arrived. All things considered they were amazingly quiet about it but the oldest ate so fast he threw up. As a result of this the kids missed their desert. There were no facilities for children and there was seemingly no thought given to their needs.
After that we decided to eat somewhere else the next day.
Interestingly, service in the hotel was fine the next two days. Maybe they just had a bad day, but for a hotel operating on the level that this one claims to operate on this is just unacceptable...And at the restaurant there just seemed to be no-one coordinating the well meaning waiters.
This hotel seems geared mostly towards business travellers, receptions and seminars and I do not recommend going here with children in a small family group.
