“Absolute a must to experience Ireland hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2010

My wife and I had the absolute pleasure of staying with Joan last week for 3 wonderful nights. We had travelled Ireland for two weeks staying in a variety of accommodation and thought we had experienced some good accommodation. However, none came any where near to the quality of both accommodation and the true Irish hospitality as we experienced with Joan. From the moment we arrived (a cup of tea and scones) we new this was going to be something special. We were welcomed as though we had been friends for many years and after staying for three nights we left feeling as part of her family. Joan and her wonderful family are truly special people who love what they are doing. The rooms were wonderful, the meals were exquisite and the warmth in her hospitality made us feel like we were at home. The location although being out of town should not put you off as it is an easy drive from many lovely area's including Cork, Waterford and all the surrounding area's. Treat yourself to something special and visit Joan for a few nights.

“Warm & welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

Booked for 2 nights after reading earlier reviews and was not disappointed. What a wonderful place to stay and what a lovely warm family! We stayed in Lady Mary's room (comprising the original 16th century tower house) and my goodness, the bed alone was worth trip - its so comfy and huge. The room was elegantly decorated, scrupulously clean, bright and airy. We were given tea on arrival (we had to refuse the cake as we were on way back to Dungarvan for wedding reception) and Mrs Nugent even offered to collect us later that night!
After a wonderful night's sleep we were treated to the breakfast speciality - porridge with fruits from the garden. I didn't think porridge could be that good. Two bowls later we tucked into an Irish fry (all locally sourced) which did us until late afternoon.
It may at first seems out of the way but Google directions are spot on (we found it no problem at 1am after the wedding) and to be honest why stay in a town when you can wake up to rolling green hills? I am recommending the Castle Country House to all family and friends and can't wait to go back again but this time with my young son and for longer. The Nugent family made us feel very welcomed. Lovely place, lovely people - what more can I say.

“Just like home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2010

This is a smart house set away in Waterford's countryside and owned and run by the Nugent family. The house has historic relevance with anecdotes from the Cromwellian wars and about local local dignitaries playing a part in its 400 year story. On arrival we were met by Joan complete with warm handshake, hot tea and a slice of pie! This was followed by a tour around the house and being shown to our room with all the charm of a stately manor.

Later we met Emmett, certainly a character and as a pair Joan and Emmett make great hosts, they are helped by two lovely daughters and the rest of the family are always about as the house is part of a working dairy farm. Now, as with all farms, and as other reviewers have said the breakfast is amazing! To quote Joan and her fabulous fruit filled (grown in the garden) porridge, "you must go back and back and back until its all gone!!" If I had done that, and it was tempting I wouldn't have had a chance to sample the other breakfast delights, such as the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, or the full Irish breakfast, again all locally sourced. This really set you up for the days events to follow.

It must be the only B&B I've stayed at where the dog takes you for a walk! Scruff the little wire haired Jack Russell came to say hello and preceded to take us for a walk down by the river and the bridge, and round the garden area. Something we tried to make a daily habit of while we were there, Scruff in tow or otherwise.

The area is beautiful, and with in 30 min drive you find yourself in many interesting places, Waterford, Cork, and the smaller local villages, all full of friendly people. The scenery is amazing too.

To summarise, if you like friendly people who like to sit with you and swap stories over a cup of tea, eating a breakfast of Kings, staying in a comfortable house that feels like home, then you need to book this place now, really!

I have no doubt we will be back!

“Like Coming Home while still on Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

Joan & Emmett and their amazing family truly make you feel at home. I can't tell you what an oasis this place seemed after all the chaos and frustration of trying to plan our trip and figure out transportation. You hear a lot of talk about Irish hospitality, and I have to say this wonderful family must be the source! They were all incredibly kind and hospitable. The grounds are gorgeous, and they have the best showers! One last raving review: the rhubarb is to die for!

“Welcomed like family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2010

If you are looking for Irish hospitality - this is the place to stay. We arrived mid-afternoon to The Castle Country House and was greeted by Joan with a hug and a handshake. Joan was very warm and welcoming - she made us coffee and cookies as soon as we arrived and even offered to drive us into town. The house and property were great and the beds were very comfortable. It was an overall great experience. The breakfast was delicious and the porridge was everything that everyone said it was. We loved their dogs and were able to play with them a bit in the morning. Joan gave us nice dinner recommendations and was very accommodating to our plans. We visited with her daughter-in-law as well as grandchild in the morning. It really did feel like we were family - we wished we had one more night there.

The only downside for us was that it wasn't closer to town but that was only because we were still adjusting to driving and we like to stay out late at the pubs at night. Joan arranged for a taxi for us and it ended up working out great.

We would highly recommend this place if you are in the Dungarvan area.
