My husband and stayed at this hotel over a period of at least 7 years, early on after a stint of work in Rome, and later, during the period when we were looking to buy a house in Italy. We now go there for dinners out, as the restaurant is one of the best in Italy. The staff is professional, yet friendly and genuine. They will do everything possible to accomodate your needs. We include the dining room staff, many of whom have worked in the hotel for years.

We think the very pristine decor is beautiful and restful; you will find it austere if you favor lots of pattern and decoration, but the rooms contain every comfort and convenience. There is a wide range of rooms, and we have been in many of them; they have all been very comfortable. Though the hotel is situated in a small town, when you are at the large pool in the back, you will feel like you are in the countryside. It is wonderful to return after a day of touring in the summer and swim. It is also lovely to spend an afternoon reading under an olive tree poolside. This hotel is suitable both as a place to relax, and as a place close to many tourist destinations in Umbria.

“Nice, but not five stars”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

My husband and I stayed here for six nights in October 2011 when we used Torgiano as the base for exploring the rest of Umbria. The hotel is a sprawling labyrinth of 50 rooms, some with private terraces/gardens, some two-level with rooftop views, others that overlook the parking lot. The hotel and rooms are clean and comfortable, but we were surprised the hotel considers itself a five-star hotel.
We requested to change rooms after two nights, because our original room (which had a lovely garden terrace and view of Umbrian farmland) had so many insects. By the time we had killed our 15th insect (including two Godzilla-sized spiders), we were over the great view and wanted a bug-free room. Our second room was a two-leveled room without bugs. Bugs aside, the couches in the rooms were worn with some stains, and the beds (which they advertise as VERY comfortable) sagged in the middle. When we requested an ironing board and iron, we were given an old, stained ironing board. Again - I would expect this from a 3-star hotel, not a five-star.
The restaurant offers up nice local fare, but its prices are higher than the well-rated restaurants we found in Umbria whose food was of a higher caliber. The menu doesn't include prices, so we had a bit of sticker shock when it came time to pay the bill.
Breakfast was included in our room price, and entails a buffet with scrambled eggs, fruit juices from concentrate, yogurts and cereals, bread and cornetti (croissants), and some canned fruits. Again, not five star.
Would we stay at the hotel again? Sure, as long as we had a room with no garden and as long as we could get the rooms for under 100 euros a night.

Room Tip: Call the hotel directly. They often have last minute rooms that they may greatly discount!

“One of the best hotels in Italy!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

Hotel - great service, very accommodating and informative (especially Hilda). We walked in without reservations and they gave us a great rate (140 Euros per night), free wifi, parking and breakfast. They upgraded us a to junior suite, which was huge. 1 - 1/2 bath, beautiful bathroom, all amenities. The king size bed is a real king size, not two beds pushed together, like most European hotels. The linens are soft and comforting. This hotel is owned by the Lungarotti family, who also has a cantina.

They have a good bar and a variety of drinks.

Restaurant - good and not so good.

They have excellent service, by far the best we have ever seen. We had a 1997 Rubesco Montefalco Riserva from their cellar - only 40 Euros.

We started with sauteed squash blossoms filled with airy ricotta cheese with fresh cherry tomatoes & basil - absolutely perfect!
We then had the BEST risotto I have ever had (and I've had many). It was creamy, buttery, saffron with loads of chopped black truffles. The flavor was incredible and it was so creamy.
The second course is where I become disappointed. I had lamb which was cooked "well done", lamb should be medium at best. I would have even been happy with medium well. No pink whatsoever. It did however come with a fantastic passati (dessert wine) sauce with tomatoes and kumquats - the sweet and tart flavors together were great. My partner had a veal fillet with lardo. He liked his but again, "well done".

we haven't tried the spa but are anxious to do so.

I forgot to mention breakfast is included and there is a HUGE variety on the buffet. They even have a carrot juicer and an orange juicer (mix them together, they are fabulous and healthy), good proscuitto, hams, cheese, crossiants, etc. Yummy!

Really quiet location too.

“With a little personal service would help.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

We booked in for 3 nights as a central spot to explore Perugia. The facilities are lovely but the reception staff are very stiff. We had to ask for everything instead of it being offered. The hotel is spread out over a large area and most guests had trouble finding their way to and from their rooms to the restaurant, breakfast room, and pool. A simple set of directions would have made life easier. Instead of showing guests where the restaurant and breakfast rooms were, the staff merely pointed in a direction and said "its right there". We were very disappointed with the restaurant. It is rated very highly but the room was filled with large tour groups. Service suffered. The food came too fast, was overcooked, and was contrived. When we asked about dessert, we were offered the dessert buffet the tour groups were using! Not our ideas of a fine dining establishment. Not a place to go for a romantic stay but probably very good for tour groups.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the interior of the hotel. We booked through Expedia and were given a ro...

“Nothing could be better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

While we did not stay overnight at the hotel, we had lunch in the restaurant and were wowed. We would love to return and stay at the hotel, as it is posh and has wonderful staff who catered to us for the hour we waited for the restaurant to open for lunch. Lunch was an incredible experience. I went with suggestions from the staff and was not disappointed. Treat yourself to the experience. It is worth it.
