I'm guessing this hotel was a great 4 star hotel in the 70/80ies. Now it's a 2+ star.
My wife and I stayed here at the end of June 2011 based on the star rating and the many positive reviews. Boy, was I wrong about this hotel....
It started a month before our arrival when I found out we had a very late flight and needed a late checkout, shower facilities, or an additional night there. I sent the hotel a mail, which didn't get answered. I then had to speak to hotels.com(where I'd booked the hotel) to pay for an extra night instead. They were very helpful, the hotel was not.
Then, when we arrived at the hotel, we thought the lobby looked quite nice. But once we got to the room we were VERY disappointed. It looked like some youth hostel or something. The rooms were clean, but the carpet was stained, the bedspread had mold-specs(you can zoom in on the bed-picture to see), the bathroom was tiny, and the shower would give anyone claustrophobia. There were cracks in the ceiling in the shower, and all furniture, AC, carpet, hairdryer and bedspread were all from the 70/80ies.
This is copied from their own website: "All rooms are recently renovated.
They are elegantly furnished, have 24 hour air-conditioning, satellite TV, mini bar, hair-dryer and music in the bathroom." "The BLUE SKY Beach Hotel is a category A hotel"
Well, by recently renovated they mean that they have changed some of the lamps and the light swithes, a shower head or two, and in some rooms removed the carpet. Other than that, nothing has been done. I looked into other rooms in the hall, and they looked the same as ours.
We were mortified but had to make the best of it so we stayed for a night. That night involved screaming and yelling from the bar street right outside the window, cars with music blearing, and the AC cooled too much so we were both freezing(I'll get back to the AC). In addition to this the bed was so hard we actually had red marks on our bodys in the morning. (And I don't have problems with hard beds.) you can compare it to sleeping on a medium thick carpet on a hard floor.
Needless to say we were both unhappy and tired as we didn't get any sleep that night.
I spoke with the lady in the reception who was helpful and found an alternate room for us. This room was a little bigger, had a bath instead of only shower, and so it wasn't as claustrophobic. It was also a bit further from bar street so it helped a lot. But still the room looked the same. same furniture, same hard beds, same carpet, etc.
Let's move on to the AC. It was actually quite funny as in the first room the AC didn't turn on unless you set it to below 15 deg centigrade. Then it started and went on and on until you turned it slightly above 15 deg. In the second room you had to turn it to just below 5 degrees to get it to work, and slightly above 5 degrees to turn it of. If it didn't react when you did this you had to turn it on, off, move the fan speed up and down a few times then it started, usually.
We got twin beds in the second room. One of these had a large "dump" in it where people had weighed it down through the times. (see image). Because of the hardness of the beds we resorted to laying down some blankets under the sheets. This helped a little.
The shower pressure was not good but almost adequate. (See image.)
Someone had tried putting silicone in the cracks around the bath and walls, but I don't think that person was a carpenter.. (see image) But at least the cracks were sealed...
Next: the breakfast:
This was supposed to be American Breakfast. We were hoping the breakfast was nice at least. It wasn't.
They had sausages, fried eggs, bacon and sometimes french fries. Problem was the sausages wasn't very good, but alright (one morning they had some chorizo-ish sausage which only tasted of fat.) Then they had bread of different types which was alright, but the only thing you could have on were one type of cheese(which i wasn't particularly fond of), some cheap jam(which tasted artificial), and two types of meat (baloney of some kind) but no ham, no turkey slices nothing else. They also had some cereal, and some tomato beans(which i didn't try as it didn't look right.. The colour was more brown/yellow than red as they usually are so I skipped it)
They had some fruit as well.
The last day we bought some lunch at the grocer's next door. They had some mini baguettes with turkey ham and cheese. these were quite good. We would rather have bought our breakfast there than eat in the hotel had we known about it sooner.
Oh, yeah. The pool is way too small so all the sunbeds gets "toweled" before breakfast, but the sun doesn't reach the whole pool until between 1 and 3 pm. I'm guessing 1/3-1/2 of the pool area had sun at noon. The beach is alright if you rent a sunbed(large round rocks and pebbles all over(see image) with a constant wind to keep you cool. But for calm swimming I'd choose the east beach.
The sunset was nice though. And the location is alright. Bar street is close if you want it, restaurants are all over, and you're close (5-10 min walk) to the shopping area in town. You're also quite close to old town, but Ellis beach(eastern beach) is a bit far to go to every day.
If you expect 2 stars you'd probably be pleasantly surprised. If you're expecting 4 stars you'll be utterly disappointed.
A tip to the hotel: Get the hotel music working again and start playing Love boat theme, Bee gees, mambo and Tom Jones over and over again. In addition you could hang some 70ies clothing in the closets of the rooms for the guests to wear to get in the mood.
As for the people who has been giving this hotel great reviews...: have they done the 70ies theme all the way and lit up a doobie....? I can't imagine what else could have happened....
Room Tip: do not get a shower-only room.
