“Don't think twice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

I wouldn't think twice about returning to the Marco Polo mansion. Everything about it was amazing. The way it's tucked away on a small winding side street, the hidden courtyard where Efi serves up the most amazing Greek dinners (we ate dinner there twice, why go out?) and the timeless atmosphere of a place that is centuries old and immaculately decorated. A coffee table book has even been published about this place, available to peruse and buy in the lobby.
My husband and I went here for our honeymoon in September, so heat was never really a problem. Can't speak for how it is in summertime, but this place was built before air conditioning and they make the most of cross-breezes. Like many hotels in Greece, some rooms for two had two twin beds instead of a queen or king, but we stayed in two different rooms where they had queen-sized beds. (We could only afford the cheapest room, but when Spiros learned we were on our honeymoon he upgraded us for as many nights as he had better rooms available.) One night we stayed in a fabulous suite with soaring ceilings, a separate bedroom and sitting area, a private entrance and courtyard. I felt like a princess!
The one downside, privacy was somewhat lacking. The windows are nearly always open. Depending on what side you're on, that's either to a narrow pedestrian street, or to the hotel courtyard. But I didn't care, my husband and I were both so in love with the charm and uniqueness of this place.
Some couples we met were there were regulars. One was returning for their 10-year anniversary! This is the kind of place to cherish and return to again and again.

One last recommendation: visit Rhodes in the early fall or late spring and you will have SUCH a better experience. The streets were uncrowded and there were better deals everywhere. Everyone told us that being there in summer is to be shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of other European tourists.

“Marco Polo turned what could have been an ordinary tourist experience into an enchanting island of charm.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2010

Ma rco Polo Mansion is for lovers of botique hotels. Hidden away on a narrow, winding street in the Old Town, Marco Polo welcomes you with a glass of wine and a promise to make your stay beautiful. The hosts live up to that promise very well. When we found that Olympic had cancelled our trip -- inexplicably -- to our next island, Effie got on the phone and made sure we had reservations. Meanwhile she plied us with wonderful meals and reassurances that all would be well. Our host led us one night through the serpentine streets to a wonderful outdoor seafood restaurant. And when we finally left Marco Polo, they saw us out, staying with us until our taxi came. All in all, a memorable stay.

“Amazing hidden restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2010

First, I want to tell you about the Marco Polo restaurant in the hotel's courtyard. If you're visiting Old Town, you must try it. You would never expect it, but the food was absolutely delightful. It was the best meal I had in Greece. I'm vegetarian, so they brought me a tapas-like medley of creative and fresh dishes. The food is more eclectic, not traditional Greek. It is such a charming restaurant and very romantic in the evenings. The owner of the hotel (who was also our server) may take a little while to warm up, but trust me, he has got class and intelligence.

The hotel rooms are good enough. Sure, they're a little outdated, but I think you're paying for location and rustic-ness of the place. The building is over 600 years old, which, in itself, is pretty cool.

“Very much overrated.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2010

Towels are like sandpaper, and don't stand next to the walls, as they will stain your clothing with the pigment.

This place REALLY disappoints. It is brutally hot, we were not provided with any air conditioner or fan. As said previously, the street below is VERY noisy. The rooms are completely dark. We actually left some of our belongings because it was so dark we could not see to pack. The breakfast was our worst in Greece.

Stay at The Avalon! It is beautiful, a wonderful location, quiet, and worth the money. A completely different class than this scam.

“Restaurant A Must”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2009

This will be the shortest review in history as I have not stayed at the hotel.
However I have eaten there and it is an absolute must do. The Italian trained greek chef turns out some wonderfully 'confused' fusion creations, like you have never had before. A wonderful break from traditional Greek cuisine.
