“A very welcoming place to stay.”

This hotel was a lovely place to spend a holiday. There was a very warm welcome at reception and all the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my fortnight's stay, from the two 'comedians' in the bar to the chatty waiters and the ever-helpful ladies on reception. The hotel was very clean and well-maintained and there was a very good choice of food, both hot and cold, at breakfast. My single room had an inland view but this did not detract from my enjoyment although it would have been even better to have had a room with a seaview.

The location was excellent, being situated at the quiet end of the harbour but close enough to observe the comings and goings of inter-island ferries just round the corner. Plenty of places to 'potter' and explore. The old village is well worth a visit if only for the spectacular views over the harbour. Pedi beach, reached by bus, was a relaxing place to while away the day. Good food at the taverna on the beach too! Enjoyed the local tavernas and there are more than enough to visit a different one each evening if you wish. Panormitis was really interesting but catch the early bus (7.45 from Symi, August 2011) to avoid all the excursion boats which arrive throughout the day!

Don't know why the brochures list the hotel as being 'Symi, Rhodes Town' unless it's because the majority of travellers (I think) seem fly to Rhodes and then travel by ferry to Symi island.

“Lovely hotel, great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

We had been in Symi in 2000 and decided to come back this year. The Nireus is very comfortable especially by small Greek island standards. Very clean with friendly and helpful staff and one of the better restaurants in Symi. The location is five minutes walk from the main action in the town, around the harbour, and you can swim from steps immediately across a small road.

Since 2000 Symi has become more of a jet set destination - Michael Douglas and Brad Pitt both called in their yachts in late June - and prices reflect this.

There's only one problem with the hotel. They've put seats and sun umbrellas on the waterside opposite but they don't own this area. Large numbers of locals accordingly use it for swimming, which is fine in itself, but they include many kids up to 16 or so who jump and dive, run around, make lots of noise, and care nothing for the effects this has on the hotel guests or anyone else - they can be quite cheeky and dismissive if rebuked for bumping into you. The hotel people are aware of this and apologetic but there's nothing they can do - sea front in Greece apparently can't be privately owned or controlled.

Maybe this only happens in school hols, but it's with regret I'd have to say it's something
that adversely affected the holiday for us. I hope the hotel can somehow solve the problem.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a sea front room- the sea and mountain view is fantastic.
