My fiancé and I have just returned from a 7-night stay at the Sun Palace. Prior to our departure, I had read many of the reviews on Trip Advisor and was more than a little apprehensive about what we would find when we arrived...
Having now experienced the Sun Palace first hand, I do wonder whether some of the previous reviewers stayed at the right hotel. Of course, it's always possible to find something to complain about if you really want to. I think it largely depends on attitude and (un)realistic expectations. We paid approximately £800 (total, not each) for a one-week stay (5-12 October), which included flights and transfers. This, I thought, was very cheap for an all-inclusive hotel and so my expectations were not particularly high. However, we both had a lovely holiday and I can honestly say that we got an absolute bargain!
Below is my review of the hotel:
CHECK-IN:
Quick, easy, pleasant. Exactly what you need at 3am after encountering a long delay (due to the Greek strikes).
LOCATION:
The hotel is located on the outskirts of Faliraki (approx 10 min walk to the town centre) and is reasonably close to the beach (approx 5 min walk). Many of the clubs and bars had already closed down by the time we arrived so, if that’s what you’re looking for, don’t go in October! However, this was not a problem for us.
ROOMS:
We stayed in room 163, a room in the main hotel block with a pool view. I had specifically requested a "pool view" in advance and was very pleased to find that this had been accommodated. Our room (including the bathroom) was spacious and nicely decorated with basic modern furniture. The twin beds were comfortable and the linen was changed regularly. The maids did an excellent job of keeping the room clean, particularly the floor (something that I am fussy about), and were always very pleasant.
Two very minor negatives about the room: Firstly, the phone in the bathroom was beeping constantly when we arrived. We reported this the following morning and it was fixed the same day. Secondly, the shower pane in the bathroom leaked. However, there was a small grid in the floor which allowed water to escape and the bath mat soaked up most of the excess water. Since this did not present a real problem for us, we chose not to complain.
On our last day, we used a courtesy room (room 158, also in the main block but overlooking the mountain), and found the bathroom to be quite a bit smaller than ours had been. Not a cause for complaint, merely an observation. Otherwise, the room was almost identical.
We did not get a chance to see any of the annex rooms.
POOL AREA:
The whole pool area was very clean and George, the chap in charge of keeping it all spic-and-span, was extremely pleasant. There are a couple of shallow pools for the wee-ones and two pools of varying depths for the bigger kids/adults. During our stay, the pool area was patrolled by a life-guard, which was no doubt very reassuring for those guests with children. There were always plenty of sunbeds available (perhaps because the hotel was not full during our stay) and so people didn’t seem to feel the need to partake in ridiculous sunbed-reserving antics.
There did not appear to be any toilets in the pool area itself but there were some just inside the main building between the lobby and the Main Bar. Again, these were always clean and we did not encounter any problems.
FOOD:
The important bit. Quite frankly, I thought the food in the Main Restaurant was absolutely delicious. There was so much variety that I often found myself overeating just so that I could try everything that I wanted! The restaurant did get quite busy at times but we never had to wait for a table or queue for food, although we did occasionally have to wait a few minutes for clean glasses to be brought out. However, I do wonder whether meal times would run quite as smoothly in the height of summer.
Breakfast – there was the usual selection of cooked food (eggs, bacon, beans etc), continental meats and cheeses, pastries, yoghurts, fruits and so on… The chefs also made fresh crepes to order, which were delicious. I can’t thing of anything else that I would have wanted.
Lunch – there was always plenty of hot and cold food to choose from, including soup, meat / fish dishes, rice, pulses, pasta, salad etc… The chefs also made omelettes to order, which I thought was a nice touch. Another reviewer pointed out that food from the previous evening was sometimes recycled at lunch, but dressed up slightly differently. To some extent, this did happen during our stay but it was usually something like a pie or a rice dish that was done slightly differently. Personally, I had absolutely no problem with this and did not notice any obvious difference in quality. To throw away perfectly good food would be a complete waste (there are people starving in this world!) and the Greeks are, of course, experiencing difficult times at the moment. How many times do you make too much food for dinner at home and eat the left-overs for lunch the following day? It’s just common sense.
Dinner – each night had a different theme: Greek night, Mexican night, Italian night and BBQ night to name but a few. Therefore, to say that there was no variety in the food simply cannot be correct. The desserts were generally yummy too. Of course, the salad and condiments selection was always the same (this was true at lunch too), though the variety on that front was also great.
Snack Bar – three large meals a day was more than enough for me and I simply didn’t have room in my belly to try the Snack Bar! It seemed to serve chips, chicken nuggets, salad, fruit etc… but I didn’t investigate any further than that. Plenty of people seemed to eat there though, so it must have been ok.
We found all the staff in the restaurant to be pleasant (some more so than others, perhaps) and very efficient.
DRINKS:
The really important bit. Unfortunately, this is the only aspect of the holiday that made me grumble slightly. The local lager, Vap, was very drinkable (similar to Carlsberg, I would say), as were the local spirits (“Old Beaver” tastes just like crème caramel Baileys!). However, the red and white wine tended to be watered down, which I found to be more than a little disappointing. Although it was still drinkable, it wasn’t great. On the odd occasion that the wine wasn’t watered down, it was really quite nice. There was a good selection of cocktails though, which more than made up for things. Local soft drinks, tea/coffee and water were plentiful too.
ENTERTAINMENT:
The entertainment team were very excitable and really did their best to get people motivated to join in the daytime and evening activities. Water Gym, run by Carolina, was excellent and a great way to burn off some of those extra calories from all the yummy food. The evening entertainment was a bit hit-and-miss, but it is very difficult to please everybody. The main entertainment stage is outside, meaning the noise does travel to the rooms nearby. The evening entertainment concluded somewhere between 11pm-Midnight every day. It wasn’t an issue for us but I can see how it might create problems for those wanting an early night.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
We found all the staff to be thoroughly pleasant and helpful. The clientele at the hotel during our stay was mixed: we Brits were in the minority (due to the fact that it was October) and there were a lot of guests from Germany and Scandinavia. However, we didn’t find this to be a problem at all – everyone was polite and observed the British tradition of queuing where necessary!
In summary, we found the Sun Palace to be excellent value for money and wouldn’t hesitate to return again on that basis. However, I would think twice about staying there at the height of summer, as I imagine it can get a little crowded. We were also told that it attracts a lot of ‘yoof’ in the summer months.
The Sun Palace is not a 5* hotel but it does not pretend to be. If luxurious accommodation, first class service and gourmet food is what you’re looking for, go somewhere else. But, if you’re looking for a relaxing break in the sunshine with plenty of good food and drink, you can’t go wrong with the Sun Palace.
Room Tip: If you prefer early nights, ask the hotel for a quiet room away from the entertainment stage in adva...
