We have just returned from this family-run hotel and were delighted with our excellent holiday, sad to leave behind folks we had met from all over the UK.
Greek accommodation is often basic, like the plumbing and hot rings next to the sink BUT that's what we expected. What sets this hotel apart is the beautiful garden, pool and cleanliness of the place with the personal service of the family who try to be on hand whenever called upon throughout the day.
The pool bar is not cheap but sunbeds are free so are still cost effective when compared to the expense of beach sunbeds/beachside bars/restaurants.
There are two 24/7 bakeries (one close by and one next to the cheapest 'BIG' Co-op Supermarket) offering scrumptious sweets and savouries. The tavernas are good but the best (in our opinion) are Scirocco (Greek/Italian) and Volcano (traditional Greek) - special thanks to all the boys (waiters) and girls (chefs) at the latter.
Elli and Eugene were perfect hosts at the hotel and you must try her Fruit Salad & Frappe! We never had problems with sun beds and had great fun talking to like minded people who were on holiday to relax.
The sunset cruise is expensive as they have cut back on the wine (economy) and it was short (time of year?) but the buffet was very good and well thought out for food at sea (Catered in). The Village tour was good value and very interesting but you do need to be physically fit - and we were not pre-warned by our Rep (he was not great to be fair). The guide joined the coach very late and then asked for money for herself and the driver at the end - we don't mind giving we HATE being asked!
Overall NOT suitable for young families/teenagers - ideal for couples who love peace, quiet, cats, dogs (all run free in the streets/restaurants) and great Greek hospitality. Santorini is a unique volcanic island with black beaches and underground volcanic activity, no natural trees or drinking water and some windy days but don't let that put you off.
We've set up a facebook page for the large yellow duck at Philoxenia - see Quacky McDuck for pictures of him on holiday there!
