My friend and I stayed at La Palapa for a week, and we were so happy that we made the choice to stay there as opposed to every other property we ended up peeking at on the beautiful island of Holbox. Upon our arrival, we were extended a warm welcome by Vicente, who is the very embodiment of hospitality and professionalism. We got settled into our lovely room with a hammock on a private terrace overlooking the sea, and immediately went down to eat at the hotel's restaurant, "Casa Nostra," which happens to be one of the island's freshest and best. Beppe decided for us exactly what we needed and made us laugh all our urban cares away as we dined on his perfectly-cooked pasta with fresh, succulent langoustines. Mmm!
We then relaxed to the sound of the sea all week. Holbox is truly a gem in Mexico, and La Palapa strikes the perfect balance between luxury and simplicity. Nothing is overdone here, but nothing is lacking. We checked out some of the hotels that purport to be La Palapa's competition, such as Tortugas. Tortugas definitely seemed more uptight and 'resort-y,' Holbox Dream doesn't have a cafe, and Las Nubes is far away all on its own down the island. We really loved the central placement of La Palapa, the fact that it had a restaurant and a cafe open most of the time (I loved getting an afternoon cappuccino, for instance), and overall the tranquil mood that reigned there. Rooms are simplistically and beautifully appointed, beds are supremely comfortable, water pressure is excellent and always hot, and anything extraneous that you might need or want is instantly furnished without any complications. In addition to Vicente being so wonderful to us, I also developed a fierce fondness for Chrystel, who was equally sweet, helpful, and just really a lovely person all around. Vicente, Chrystel, and, we will not forget--Celia--made us feel as if La Palapa was a home away from home. Despite other more luxurious options on the island to choose from, I would only ever stay here again. Holbox is really laid back, relying on its natural, unspoilt beauty, and you really only need the basics--furnished in the most professional, unassuming fashion--to make your stay here exactly what it needs to be. La Palapa is exactly that.
Room Tip: ASk for a room as far away from the cafe as possible if you don't want to be woken up by Beppe...
