We chose to stay at the Ohana Waikiki West after seeing the price and compared it to what it would cost to stay at other Waikiki properties.
The best feature of this property is the location - it is very handy to the central shopping streets of Waikiki, and only a 5 minute walk to the beach and canal.
The rooms are older and dated - whilst clean they are really in need of a good renovation. There are two (smallish) queen sized beds, a small kitchenette with oven top and microwave and a separate bathroom with shower, toilet, and sink.
We were initially given a room on the fourth floor, however we had to ask to be moved to another room as our room had an interconnecting door, and we could hear EVERY word that the other guests in the next door room were saying at 5:45AM - needless to say we were not impressed!! After being given another room on the sixth floor we were reasonably happy for the other four nights of our stay! (Although when I mentioned to the reception staff about the loud talking I was told that it is not unusual to hear other people in a hotel, however there were no problems with noise in our second room. I understand, and know, that hotels aren't the quietest, but being woken by the next door guests at such an early time is ridiculous!)
My kids both love swimming, and we had also decided this would be a great place to stay because of the big swimming pool. However, the water was so cold that they only went in it once - even the ocean water was warmer, and this was in the winter!
There are a lot of restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk which is perfect when you are tired after experiencing all that Waikiki has to offer during the day.
The biggest trap, and one which needs to be mentioned, is the timeshare type travel desk located in the lobby. We didn't realise when we asked for information on Diamond Head that the person we were asking was a sales person for the timeshare they are promoting, and trying to get you to go to one of their seminars by offering a free breakfast! The woman didn't have a clue about Diamond Head, and gave us the wrong information, which we only found out the next day when we went there. The woman said the gates closed at 3pm- they don't! And that the track would be slippery because it had been lightly raining - it wouldn't have been as bad as she made it out to be! Because of that we put off going to Diamond Head until the next day and as a result we had to miss out on other activities we had planned to do instead!
Best feature? The location!
