If you're travelling to Newport on limited funds, you'll find out very quickly that there aren't a lot of options. In fact I think this is the *only* option if you're on a student budget, which I was when I visited in September 2011. But being the only option shouldn't discourage you. It is a hostel, true - don't expect a period Bed and Breakfast with silver and full breakfast in the dining room. But it is clean, comfortable, and in an extremely good location. I paid an average of about $50/night for a private room (in the attic! so cute!), and 200 feet away a friend paid up to $240/night at a B&B.
As to the house, it reminded me a lot of my grandmother's (in a good way). The beds were surprisingly comfortable, the bathroom and kitchen clean, and there was a fair amount of useful furniture (a chair, some hooks an hangers for clothes, lamps, alarm clock). Of course there wasn't a TV (a plus, in my book), but there was free wifi. It was a bit slow up on the 3rd floor but certainly adequate. I did not eat the breakfast provided at all as I have a wheat allergy, but it is extremely basic (Tang, corn flakes) - for younger kids this might seem like a pretty normal breakfast but I just bought my own food and put it in the fridge. Not a problem, considering the price.
Oh, and Merrilee is very nice and helpful. If you need Newport advice, she is your woman! She was also nice enough to let me borrow an umbrella and iron for my work clothes. And she gave me a ride in the rain! Overall, a great stay.
