I chose the Orca Inn for a 4-night stay because of the price, obviously. And I chose it over the hostel because a private bathroom is very high on my list of necessities in lodging. This place was, in many ways, better than I expected, and the price really can't be beat.
Upon arrival on the island, I made the mile-long trek up Spring street, uphill, to the hotel. About halfway up, carting my heavy luggage, I was cursing my decision not to arrange for a taxi, and wondering if I had made the right decision in going for the budget hotel a bit farther away from the harbor. I soon found out, however, that the next-most-affordable option (which is not very affordable at all) is only a little bit closer, and every single day when I walked those extra couple blocks, I mentally imagined myself pocketing the $150 I saved by choosing The Orca Inn.
The lady who checked me in (I don't remember her name, unfortunately) was extremely friendly and helpful, even going so far as to draw me a map to restaurants based on my preferences.
The buildings and grounds were better than I imagined. Yes, they look essentially like mobile homes, but for that kind of building, they look pretty good and inviting. My standard single-bed room was pretty much exactly as pictured/described- wood paneling, tiny, somewhat awkward layout (there's a desk with a chair, but you can't really pull the chair out since the bed is in the way, and the bed sort of floats in the center of the room because there's a nightstand, microwave and air conditioner behind the headboard). The bathroom was split into two smaller rooms - one for the shower and toilet, and another room that is pretty much a closet with a sink haphazardly built into it (with a sheet of plywood as a "base cabinet"). A large window let in a lot of light (when I had the blinds open) and kept the room feeling bright. Service was good with plenty of fresh towels and extra toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner and soap always on-hand.
It certainly wasn't by any means pretty, but it was really quite clean, it smelled fresh, the bed was comfortable, the water pressure / temperature was good, and that stuff is what's important, right? It was a good place to sleep and while the room was quite small, it was plenty of space for me and my luggage, and I didn't feel cramped. Bathroom (sink-room) had a nice big mirror for getting ready in the morning, and the room had several outlets for plugging in phones and such. Also: several layers of lighting. There's a main overhead light which is a little harsh, but there were also a couple small wall lamps, which were great at night for reading or just watching TV.
Bonus: The TV had cable, and there was a mini-refrigerator! As such, I was able to bring my dinner leftovers back to my room and reheat them in the microwave while enjoying some good TV if I was feeling snacky later at night. I really didn't expect those amenities. I hear there's WiFi too, though I had no occasion to try it.
The only complaint I have is that since I tend to move around a lot in my sleep, I managed to work the fitted sheet off the bed during the night. When I was refitting it in the morning, I noticed that the mattress looked pretty dirty. I don't expect hotel mattresses (especially not budget hotel mattresses) to be spotless, but a cheap zippered plastic cover that encases the whole mattress would go a long way toward putting that sort of thing out of sight and out of mind.
Overall, this was a very excellent value - I'll definitely recommend it, and I'll definitely be back.
