I've been meaning to write this review forever. If you're looking for a great house to stay at while in Providence pick this place. The price can't be beat and James is a fantastic host. Yes the location is not great (the neighbourhood is a bit rundown) but as my girlfriend lives in new york and I lived in Montreal at the time I really didn't see a problem, shops and restaurant were a short walk away.
James was in the middle of renovating/upgrading the house bit by bit (stripping paint here, patching and replacing dry wall there) when we visited and I wouldn't be surprised if it's still ongoing. But I have to say he kept the place immaculate. The rough floors are gorgeous and the large rooms and bathrooms are fantastic. We had a great king size bed with a beautiful duvet. What I like about the place is that while the furniture in the common areas may not be brand spanking new they do not clutter up the place and they forego the tacky kitsch B+B decor common in most places.
Did I mention James picked us up from the bus station? That he drove us to the restaurant on our last day? when we made it to the bus station back to head back to nyc on that last day I realized that I had left my day pack at the house . . . who came to the rescue? well you guessed it - James! I'm not exaggerating he was a wonderful host and the knowledge of wealth he had simply made our stay all the more enjoyable as we got to visit great restaurants and cafes etc. etc.
You should definitely visit and support an amazing labour of love, visit the Gothic Guesthouse!
