“Poorly Managed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

This hotel is poorly managed. I purchased the room though priceline. Per Priceline policy, any needed changes to the room I have to go through the hotel and could cost extra. This was not a problem. I called the hotel 2 weeks before arrival to confirm if there was a sleeper sofa in the room and if not could I upgrade to either 2 beds or one with a sleeper sofa. I was told that all rooms had a sleeper sofa; I was also told that all rooms had a microwave and refridgerator (sp?). When we got there, nothing was as told. 1. The room did not have a sleeper sofa. When I questioned this, I was told that no one told me there would be and "perhaps I only thought I was told there would be a sleeper sofa." 2. There was no microwave and fridge. When I asked about this, they said yes they could get me one and "was I sure I really needed them." 3. We stayed for a week, during that time the hot tub was never available. I went to the hot tub the first day and it was obviously broke down (alge, no circulation, etc). I notified the front desk of the issue and they said that they would get it fixed. When we left 6 days later, it still was not fixed.
When it came time to check out, the bill was different than what I was quoted and paid for on priceline. When I questioned this also, they: 1. First said that was between priceline and I and that I still owed the difference. I pulled out my contract with priceline, which stated otherwise. 2. They then said that they would go back to priceline to get the additional money. I do not know if they did and what the results were. I hope that priceline did not pay the extra money as Holiday Inn agreed to the price I bid on, therefore they should not be able to change their mind at the time of the stay.

Smooth operation at front desk. Rooms tidy and clean. Bathroom looking a little aged. Acceptable place to stay.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2008

Stayed at this hotel during the last week of Feb 2008. Our 4 days / 3 nights stay started with a cold reception. Our room was on the first floor. There is no elevators. Had to carry our baggage. There was no help available.
Next the room service is terrible. It took 2h to deliver a pizza on the first night. Though the 'Room service' card in the room says -order will be delivered in 1/2h or its frree, it was never honored during our stay. The room service got our orders wrong each time -cold tea for hot tea. Food delivered, with plates missing etc.
On the day of check-out there was a surprise $125 long distance phone bill. On pointing it out that most calls happened when we were out, the clerk took it off the bill by saying 'glad I could help'. He did not apologize for unauthorized entry into our room and making these illegal calls. We noticed there was at least one other customer whose bill had an illegitimate long distance charge on it.
On the plus side the room was not too bad. The maid service was good. TV had enough chanels. There is free wireless internet. The business center has 2 computers and a printer.
If it was not for this 'long distance' phone bill, probably I would recommend it.

  • Liked — Free internet, business center
  • Disliked — Dishonest billing, terrible room service.

“OK, but expected more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2008

We booked the hotel through the hotel web site as there wasn't any price advantage by going anywhere else on the web. I travelled with my wife to visit family members we both have in the Rio Grande Valley.

Starting with the good points, I must say that the staff was very helpful. The workout room was small, but they did a good job of arranging their equipment in there. I was mainly interested in the recumbent stationary bike, the treadmill and the elliptical machine. All of these were good, even if they had been used quite a bit.

Now, with what we were disappointed. Housekeeping was finishing getting the room ready when we arrived at 5pm, even though we were scheduled to get there at 3pm. As soon as we got into the room we opened the refrigerator so that I could put in some medication that needed to be cold. When I opened the fridge door, a bit of water came out of the fridge, so we had to get some towels from housekeeping (before they left) to dry up the water. They explained that they usually turn off the fridges when guests leave to prevent an accumulation of frost in the freezer. While that's great, the downside is that there will be water running out when the next guests open the fridge. Be forewarned.

We were most disappointed with the wireless internet. Both my wife and I had to check e-mail when we weren't out and about with family. Some might say you get what you pay for, as it was free, but the wireless connectivity kept dropping out throughout our 4-day stay. I've been at other hotels where wireless connectivity was free and those hotels had better reliability.

In the end, our room was nice and spacious. We didn't get to try the pool nor the food in the restaurant, but they looked great. Housekeeping did a great job. The staff was helpful when we needed help. We just wish everything else (fridge, interntet) would have been as great as well.
