“Recently under new management.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2009

I saw the negative reviews from earlier, and can't discount those. I do know that the property has been sold sometime in '08, and I personally had a very nice stay there. It is now called the Black Mountain Lodge. I stayed in one of the 2 new cabins they had brought in. Being new, I had no complaints on the cabin. It was clean and comfortable. I'd go again with no 2nd thoughts. The hotel is conveniently located within the town of Van Buren, close to stores and places to eat. The service at the hotel was good as well.

“Beware”

This was a terrible place to stay in. The bathroom floor was rotten, the carpet was stained, the smell, well, the smell was not pleasant. I do not recommend. Hopefully they will remodel soon.

  • Liked — It had a pool and was close to the river.
  • Disliked — It was run down and in dire need of repairs.

A few months back we had planned on going to Van Buren, Missouri which is located on the Current River and they have lots of canoe rentals and canoeing there. We decided to reserve a motel being it was tourist season -We reserved two nights at Smalleys Motel- Upon arriving to the motel and entering our room there was this horrible smell- the carpet was so dirty you could not really tell what color it was- The curtain were brown stained possible smoke all though it was a non smoking room- the string in which you used to open the curtain was all brown and sticky- We turned on the bathroom sink and water leaked all over- The bath tub in the center looked as if someone had spit chewing tobbacco on it - There was a lamp by the bed which had brown stains all over the shade - the bed spread was dirty and stained There were a couple of chairs which were filthy as well and in the bathroom on the floor was mouse droppings as well as on the table by the bed- I have never in my life seen anything this bad! - needless to say we asked for our money back and luckily found another motel called Big Springs Motel- It was nothing fancy but very clean and nice and thanks to Big Springs Motel they turned what started out as a nightmare into a wonderful weekeknd! There are several Motels in
Van Buren which is a fairly small town but I would adive you if traving there to stay far far away from Smalleys
