“Awful, just awful”

I had read the bad reviews and had set my expectations low but it was soooo baaad. If there was anywhere else walking distance away you'd go, but you feel trapped when you have been picked up and dropped there! The pillows smelt awful, the tree house steps looked like they were about to fall off, electrical cables are hanging through the roof and walls, and there is only one way out if there was a fire, down the rickety spiral staircase. There is no charm in the decor, the ceiling is the moldiest ceiling I've seen in an operating building. You can't swim at the beach because it's ankle deep for 200m then you get to a reef with big waves crashing on it. The light in the room didn't work so you have to have a portable. No light for the toilet. Floor was dirty underfoot. The food was nothing fancy. I feel sorry for the staff because they deserve a break, but this is a $40 a night hotel charging $200 a night. It's insulting.

“Overated unique concept”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2009

Tree House is a run down and dirty overpriced beach bungalows. The website oversells this unique accommodation set up. The staffs are very friendly and try their best to make up for the dilapidated state of the place. Beach front bungalows have drop toilets only (Supposedly composting!) Windows has mosquito screens with large holes in them making them ineffective. Generator gives you power and light from 5.30pm to 10.30pm. There were no ceiling fans and you have to use a portable lamp for the bathroom. Watching staff stuggle with heavy bags up a very small spiral staircase is something you do see in other hotels!

Tours are the only highlight, manager Warren is a natural as a tour guide and operator, we had a great day tour of the local area including PNG lifestyles and local industry. (Eel feeding and the local swimming hole were highlights.)

The accommodation is supposed to be renovated in the future. Check before booking - but find Warren for one of his tours.
