“Somewhere to stopover for the experience of a castle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

Believe everything you read about the miserable attitude of the staff .....some of them have a shocking approach to customers which actually put us off using the bar.
The property itself is oustanding though but one night there is more than enough because everything the town has to offer can be seen in a few hours.
Breakfast was good with a good selection; the first night's dinner was disgusting - a local dish of fried breadcrumbs and an arrangement of semi edible tapas around it - avoid at all costs; but the duck on the second night was good.
There's nowhere of interest to drive out to for a half day trip so treat it as a stopover place, not a specific destination.

“A great weekend getaway 90 minute drive from Madrid”

We were looking for a typical Spanish holiday, one with more Spaniards than expats, and this place was recommended by a colleague. We were really impressed with the property and the area. The Spanish Paradors are real gems- they were set up in the 1920's as high end accommodation with many being in old castles and specializing in serving food of the region. The hotel was a former castle. Our room was spacious, clean and had a great balcony that we enjoyed bottle of cava on and admired the view. The restaurant was the former banquet hall and had lovely high ceilings with wooden beams. We had a wonderful dinner - although we decided to have beef versus the more daring rabbit and other game options.
The town is very pretty with narrow cobblestoned streets. There is a market in the square on Saturday (it closes at lunch time around 2PM along with all the shops) and there are some nice restaurants and terrace bars in the park. It's an ideal place for a hike during the day but it was very quiet in the evening.

“Medieval Castle Beautifully Remodeled”

The parador is situated on a hill overlooking the city. It is a beautifully remodeled castle that retain most of its glory, yet it's a very confortable hotel. The surrounding area has maintain its old appearance, but there are some houses that are a bit run down.
There are not too many shops around the parador, but there is a restaurants close by that looked really busy when we passed it.

“Nice stay in a fully-restored medieval fortress-castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

In a nutshell: nice for one night if you are a castle lover or want a different hotel setting, but eat in the city and do not expect 5-star service.

At almost 200 euros per night (superior room, accommodation only), this is not a bargain hotel, but it makes for a nice one-night stay if you are looking for a charming, different hotel. There are none of the amenities (spa, fitness center, pool) you would expect at that price in such a location (small town 45 minutes away from Madrid) but the reason you're paying is for the building itself, which is a huge,12th century castle that was almost completely destroyed and has been fully and tastefull restored.

The hotel is only a short walk from the center of the town of Siguenza, which can be visited in a day. I would therefore recommend just staying at the castle for one night. Based on recommendations on local websites, we booked the superior room with a jacuzzi, but I would not recommend it: it had not been used for some time and was very dirty. For the same price, you can get a room with a terrace, which must be much nicer. The rooms are otherwise clean (slight piping problem smell in the bathroom) and quite big and spacious (double bed, reading area next to the window and sofa + one-seater).

The hotel's inner court and the bar are always full of tourists, so keep that in mind... but the rest of the hotel is for guests only and is worth exploring. Don't miss the tiny chapel, which you can see from the 2nd (floor).

The food and drinks at the hotel are of course overpriced (main tourist spot in Siguenza) but are still reasonable compared to the prices in a big city. I know many people complained about rude service, but our experience was ok, although not to the standards of a hotel of this price and category.

However, if you are looking for a good and cheap place to eat, go to the Bar El Atrio, which is right next to the cathedral. It is very casual and the clientele is mostly local. It looks like a bar and not a restaurant, but you can eat lunch and dinner there and have a good glass of wine for less than 2 euros.

“Stunning Parador”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2011

This Parador is absolutely stunning. The public areas are beautifully designed and decorated and there is a lovely small garden in an extremely large courtyard. We had a fantastic suite which had been decorated with care and with entirely appropriate furniture which had been carefully selected to match the ancient interior. The staff at reception were exceptionally polite and helpful. We were made to feel welcome from the very moment of our arrival and our only regret that we stayed one night. In particular we should mention the very nice and accommodating lady who runs the bar area. Nothing was too much trouble and although there were large number of guests, everything was done with absolute precision and we were made to feel thoroughly welcome. We dined in the Parador restaurant and even though several groups of coach tour guests had arrived, it did not faze the service in the restaurant at all. The food was very good and served with great politeness, friendliness and professionalism. The staff at this Parador clearly are very proud of it, and it really shows. We really enjoyed the breakfast. A Parador not to be missed. There is no problem with parking. It is free and lots of space. The town is also worth exploring. It is very ancient surrounding the Parador. Well worth walking round the surrounding streets and looking at the ancient churches and architecture. Descending to the bottom of the hill the town becomes more "modern" as it is more 18th-century than 12th century! Well worth a visit, and again a Parador not to be missed.
