Now don’t get me wrong, the Grist Mill is a great place to stay…for the right people. The location is just a few easy miles from South Woodstock; the House/Mill was built in 1779 and is full of unique and charming character. The hosts, Peter and Carole have the right balance of friendliness and hospitality and this shows the moment you walk in the front door.
However, as it is a heritage building it comes with all the building standards of the 18th Century and this includes a very steep staircase to the second floor where all the bedrooms are located. The flooring is timber and creaks a lot and is especially noticeable when folk visit the shared bathroom in the middle of the night! Also, as the building is very old, the walls and flooring are not insulated, so conversations between rooms and from the downstairs area can be easily heard.
We stayed in the “Rood Room” which is advertised as having a queen size bed in the loft room, which is technically correct. But access is gained via a home-made style ladder and the space could be a little claustrophobic for some, so we just slept in two of the single beds instead!
There is also a very nice guest area downstairs to lay back and relax in front of the fire in one of the comfy couches.
The Breakfast room was beautifully laid out and the Breakfast was very simple, but really nice. Juice, Coffee, Tea, Fruit compote and a small tasty hot treat which on our morning was a type of savory soufflé.
In conclusion, if you’re younger and don’t mind the stairs, creaky bits and shared bathroom, then I think you will love Peter and Carole’s Grist Mill.
