Based on TA reviews, we booked a room with a small refrigerator – the rooms with refrigerators are larger.
I liked the room just fine; clean, easy to move about in, the furniture appears new, comfortable mattress and a fresh refrigerator. Aside from a couple of minor condition issues in the bathroom (needs to be re-caulked, in some spots re-grouted, plus a few rust stains), it was clean. For my taste, the bathroom is a wee bit cramped, but all the same, I like the room.
The motel sits on several acres that overlook the Ottauquechee River. The distance between the motel and the river is about 2/10 of a mile. A small pond with a fountain is also on the property. The back lawn is beautiful, and is registered with the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat.
The riverbank is a gathering place for motel guests on summer evenings. There are only a handful of chairs by the river, and we discovered the importance of getting to the river early to stake a claim.
Visiting the river anytime of the day is a refreshing way to spend time or unwind from a day of hiking and browsing through shops. The clear river water is ice cold and did wonders for my swollen, tired feet. After a 1/2-hour soak my feet were like new.
I woke in the mornings to singing birds, and a back lawn filled with squirrels and birds foraging for breakfast.
On the front lawn, the hotel offers adirondack chairs and a gazebo. We spent a couple of evenings enjoying the cool air and the starry nights in the comfort of those chairs.
Every single night of our stay, we took advantage of the Wi-Fi access. A couple of times we were able to get a connection in our room, but most nights, we sat on the patio outside of the manager’s office.
The Woodstock Farmer’s Market and the White Cottage are an easy walk from the motel. More than once, we bought sandwiches and bottled water from the Farmer’s Market to enjoy in the open air by the river in the evenings.
I am reviewing this motel against other motels, not the Four Seasons or a Ritz Carlton. As far as motels go, this is a very nice place to stay, and without question I would stay here again.
