“Basic, clean, and friendly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

We stayed overnight at the Pond Ridge enroute to another destination. Our room was small but clean. The rates were appropriate. The grounds were nice and included chairs to sit by the river. As an added bonus, a holiday fireworks show was staged from the high school next door, so sitting down by the river, we had had front row seats to the fireworks. The owners were helpful with suggestions for a wide range of restaurant. They pointed us to both a wonderful restaurant for an elegant dinner and small cafe frequented by the locals for breakfast.

“Won't stay here again!”

This motel would be fine at a rate under $100, but we were charged $150 in mid October. We walked in to find a used tissue on our bed side table, which was not a good sign. The room was a good size, but felt dirty. We asked when the bedspread was last cleaned, and the proprietor answered "I am not sure about that" (yes, that is a quote). The towels are small and paper thin, the shower horrible, the carpet nasty, and the condensation on the window was so bad we could not see out to the river. We had to use one of the three cruddy towels they provided to wipe down the window. Also, no wi-fi. Next time we would stay at the Shire Motel, which is the same price, much nicer, and actually in town rather than a mile+ drive away. Don't stay at Pond Ridge!!

“Very pleased with Pond Ridge.”

Stayed for two nights in May 2009. Room #4 was very clean, beds comfy (2 doubles), small minifridge. Beautiful grounds, loved sitting out back by the river in the evening. Innkeeper was very friendly, waited up for us (told him in advance we'd be in late) and made very good recommendations for breakfast and dinner in town, complete with map/directions and reservations for dinner. Good value and great location. LOVED Woodstock and when we return, we'll stay here again.

“Clean and Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2008

A very clean and comfortable motel just outside of the bustle of the village. Mandy, the current owner was very kind and friendly and usually at the front desk . . .goes out of her way to be a consierge, travel planner, hostess. We also caught her outside snowplowing the driveway. She directed us to the Farmer's Market for sandwiches and soups and then to Mountain Creamery for breakfast. Both suggestions were fantastic.

  • Liked — Very clean
  • Disliked — Could not use WIFI in room. Had to sit in office to get signal.

“Tranquility Found”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2008

Based on TA reviews, we booked a room with a small refrigerator – the rooms with refrigerators are larger.

I liked the room just fine; clean, easy to move about in, the furniture appears new, comfortable mattress and a fresh refrigerator. Aside from a couple of minor condition issues in the bathroom (needs to be re-caulked, in some spots re-grouted, plus a few rust stains), it was clean. For my taste, the bathroom is a wee bit cramped, but all the same, I like the room.

The motel sits on several acres that overlook the Ottauquechee River. The distance between the motel and the river is about 2/10 of a mile. A small pond with a fountain is also on the property. The back lawn is beautiful, and is registered with the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat.

The riverbank is a gathering place for motel guests on summer evenings. There are only a handful of chairs by the river, and we discovered the importance of getting to the river early to stake a claim.

Visiting the river anytime of the day is a refreshing way to spend time or unwind from a day of hiking and browsing through shops. The clear river water is ice cold and did wonders for my swollen, tired feet. After a 1/2-hour soak my feet were like new.

I woke in the mornings to singing birds, and a back lawn filled with squirrels and birds foraging for breakfast.

On the front lawn, the hotel offers adirondack chairs and a gazebo. We spent a couple of evenings enjoying the cool air and the starry nights in the comfort of those chairs.

Every single night of our stay, we took advantage of the Wi-Fi access. A couple of times we were able to get a connection in our room, but most nights, we sat on the patio outside of the manager’s office.

The Woodstock Farmer’s Market and the White Cottage are an easy walk from the motel. More than once, we bought sandwiches and bottled water from the Farmer’s Market to enjoy in the open air by the river in the evenings.

I am reviewing this motel against other motels, not the Four Seasons or a Ritz Carlton. As far as motels go, this is a very nice place to stay, and without question I would stay here again.

  • Liked — Wi-Fi, riverfront, helpful staff, clean rooms
