“very pleasant experience”

stayd at rocce sarde in july 2007 as a family of 4 with 2 boys aged 6&4 staying in a 2 bed apartment in their residence. The apartments (10 in total) are very clean and spacious and nicley furnished with a beautiful view of the coast, garden and smallish swimming pool. it is located 1 mile away from the hotel so you need a car to go to the hotel for the meals and facilities. The hotel is well maintained, swimming pool and garden are extremely pleasant areas and often fairly quiet even in high season. The food was good, delicious & plentiful breakfast and huge 4 course dinners every night. (our kids did not eat the dinners but suppose that was to be expected!)
A good choice away from the crowds, but very close to attractions of the costa smeralda.

“wont be back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2007

We stayed here June 07. I have to say we won't be back. We were in a family room and it was just too small. Also only a shower and no bath
in a family room is not on. plus no light over the shower, which meant that it was very dark (Psychoish at times). Rooms very dull and
dated. Breakfast truly awful - e.g. tinned pears and a bowl of mouldy apples - IN ITALY.

on the plus side - lovely pool. lovely gardens - fab flowers - great views. Very welcoming receptionist and pool staff - other staff members not overly friendly. after the intial warm welcome nobody said good morning, good night etc. to us for 4 days - the suites are a short distance from the main building though.

“Another great stay at Rocce Sarde”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2006

Having had a wonderful stay at Rocce Sarde three years ago in one of the garden suites we hoped not to be disappointed by visiting again - we were not!

On arrival we were allocated a top floor, spacious room with amazing sea views (better view than the suite). The room was nicely furnished with lots of storage and an immaculate shower room. There is no lift at Rocce Sarde and it certainly kept us fit walking up all of those stairs!

Last time we stayed we were on half board and although the food is good we felt reluctant to eat out as we had already paid for dinner, this time we opted for mixed board giving us three nights to eat elsewhere. The food is good and always left the restaurant full but we would rather have fewer courses and more choice than the few options and four courses offered.

The pool is great and never seemed to be overcrowded on either of our visits and there is plenty of room for sun and shade. The lunch/snack menu at the poolside bar is limited but tasty. Evenings spent at the bar in the evening are pleasant but it is the only bar that seems to open (of the two they have) and we always found it gets quite cool and breezy so we end up leaving sooner than we would if there were an indoor option (although it saves on the drink bill).

We never got to breakfast but usually went to Portisco marina for a coffee and croissant.

The staff at Rocce Sarde are great, the guys by the pool and the reception staff are always pleasant and had a good giggle at my husband trying to remember his room number in Italian but they were grateful for the effort!

A car is a great advantage as it is not really possible to walk anywhere and there are some wondeful beaches to explore.

Overall this hotel is a good quality, friendly option in a stunning setting, it may not be chic or contemporary but it is very comfortable and clean. The Costa Smerelda is not cheap and for those who are used to paying Spanish prices it will seem expensive but to us it is worth the premium and we will definitely be back again!

  • Liked — Stunning views, quality of room.
  • Disliked — All the stairs.

“A lovely hotel, but you'll need a car”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2006

The hotel lived up to the good reviews i'd read and we had a great stay. The hotel is set in the side of a granite hill with outstanding views to the sea. The gardens are terraced with the pool being set amongst olive trees so you can relax in the sun or the shade. The poolside bar serves snacks, salads and drinks up until midnight plus there is live music every night.

The rooms were comfy, very clean and air conditioned. The staff were courteous and plentiful but if you take the trouble to learn a little Italian, it goes a long way. In this particular region of Sardinia it is just as well to practise your Italian as English is not so widely spoken.

The food was of an excellent standard with a four course evening meal. Being a mediterranean island, expect at least one course to feature a tentacled sea creature.

The only 2 negative things I would say are that you will need a car as the hotel is in quite a remote location and also that it is not cheap. To be fair it is not a cheap island and being on the edge of the Costa Smeralda you would not expect it to be.

So, to recap, for a relaxing, family friendly holiday in Sardinia, I would recommend the Rocce Sarde.

  • Disliked — Lack of local amenities
