“Nice hotel, shame on the service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

came to Cala Gonone on a bus in the late evening and hotel was difficult to find, especially when you have three (or maybe even four) bus stops to chose from. hotel is situated at the sea side, along the promenade.

The clientèle is mainly of German origin. The owner is ever so present and can speak fluently Italian, German and English. Beer from the mini bar €4, water €1.5. Free of charge beech towels or key to the safe. Internet €1/ hr, free postcards at the reception. Three-way plugs unlike the English or European ones so had to use a socket in the bathroom. A small-ish TV as you open the wardrobe, cannot watch it from the bed (sky + payable channels avail); the bathroom (room C) was rather damp and smelly; a nice sea view though. The rooms two floors down, without the view, were of much better quality. The cleaning ladies kept on leaving the window in the bathroom open as it was so smelly inside. However it was a big security risk (the window was big enough to fit an adult and was easily accessible from the terrace) so had to leave a note for the staff attached to the window so they don't forget to close it behind them. bad lighting, especially in the bathroom, a noisy air con unit next to bed, no full length mirror, nor any space in the fridge, room has been cleaned twice a day.

Breakfast was simple, with a view onto the sea. I think the gentleman who was making omelettes/ scrambled eggs was the nicest member of staff there.

The area has got a lot to offer, in terms of restaurants and activities; ideal for hiking, trekking and cycling. bar/pub Roadhouse on the promenade- very good food, according to couple of the locals I met it serves the best fish/food in town. horse meat on the menu too, not that I dared to try.

The highlight of the holiday was a boat trip around the Orosei bay. The owner of the hotel tried charging me €250 for the pleasure! Only at breakfast, some 20 mins before scheduled departure, I was told that the trip I booked for that very morning was lacking participants and I have to go on my own and pay the full price! It was too late to go to the port and catch one of the regular €35 gulf trips.Needless to say, I was not happy.

Upon departure the owner tried to overcharge me for a taxi to the airport by €15 claiming his quote was different.

I went to the gulf boat trip after all and it was THE most amazing experience ever! And I've seen THE best beach ever. I will go to the area again, not to this hotel though.

Room Tip: not the room C

“A Sardinian pearl...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Winter time in Denmark is time for dreaming about holidays and sunshine. In our family we dream about Hotel Costa Dorada – this genuine pearl in Cala Gonone which we found by chance in 2005. Ever since then we have spent one week there every summer. The hotel is owned and run by charismatic Alessio Mulas and his lovely sister Grazia who rules the reception. It is a very charming hotel with a fantastic atmosphere. We love breakfast at the terrace, headwaiter Andrea preparing eggs in every possible way. Dinner, also at the terrace so very close to the sea with a beautiful view, is really something special: The food is delicious, the local wines are very good, the tables are beautifully arranged, the waiters are properly dressed and well trained etc. etc., and every night Mr. Mulas himself is present to make sure that everything is okay – and he speaks almost any language! These dinners are the chief attraction of a lovely day in Sardinia with its fantastic beaches and beauty all over the island. We always have the same suite on the top floor, it is like coming home. The cleaning is good and lots of clean towels every day. Don’t we have any complaints? No, none worth mentioning! “We can’t imagine a summer without your visit”, once Grazia wrote to us. And we certainly can’t imagine a summer without visiting Hotel Costa Dorada and the wonderful people there. To us it is heaven on earth :-))) ABC Soerensen, Denmark

“A great relaxing break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

We have just returned from a wonderfull week at the Hotel Costa Dorada.
We chose the half board option when booking and this proved to be an excellent choice with a very varied and good choice of food on offer. The Drinks were extra but all at a reasonable price for a hotel. The owner and his staff were always very helpfull and friendly even with our very limited Italian. The room we had was on the upper floor which was clean and had all we needed,it was seviced every day to a very high standard.
The Disco that has been mentioned was only on Friday and Sat and we just shut our windows and turned on the air con so it really was not that much of a problem.
We will certainly return to Sardinia and would stay at the Costa Dorada again.

“beautiful but expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

Very clean, service was great from the people there, but the breakfast was poor-considering the prices of course-, and there was a lousy disco that made sleep a difficult task. Beautiful view of the sea from the upper floor rooms, but again, for that price, one would expect a private balcony instead of a shared one. Overall very nice but rather expensive. maybe in another time of the year, it would be a better value for money.

Room Tip: the ones in the lower floor, were not disturbed by the disco.

“Wonderfull experience, as always:)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

We spend the weekend with friends and family and celebrated our wedding. The team at Costa Dorada was excellent and we cannot thank everyone enough. Food and wine was just so good, and timing perfect!! We will keep coming back as we have been many times.
