“Postcard Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

What a wonderful surprise this B&B turned out to be. They do bill hemselves as the best lil B&B in Cambridge and they are not joking. So friendly and warm and the bed and pillows were divine. I had a lovely room overlooking the courtyard and was pampered with wine, cheese and biscuits and a more than ample breakfast. Lots of good advice as to where to go and where to eat as well. Would love to come back and stay for a week. If you are travelling alone this is a perfect stop as it has a real safe and homely feel. Just a short walk to everything. Put this one on your bucket list!

“Perfect Babymoon Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

The Harding House is a little gem in Cambridge, a beautiful historic home that's secluded yet in the middle of everything this area has to offer. We stayed here for two nights for our Babymoon for a little adult time without our toddler before baby number two arrives. Everything was so perfect. Clean rooms, delicious breakfast with great variety, walking distance to Harvard Yard and the area's best restaurants.

We used wi-fi in the room to keep up with business but mostly just relaxed and took lots of naps. We really liked that we parked our car for free (spots were available because it was a midweek stay) and didn't have to use it while there - we walked to our lunch and dinner spots. I loved the 24/7 availability of healthy snacks, being pregnant there isn't a time I'm not hungry! The service was complete, warm - yet unobtrusive. It felt like staying at the home of a gracious host. I would highly recommend it for couples and even families with kids. I liked that we got to get away, yet it was only a 40 minute drive from our house north of Boston, the drive didn't feel like forever. The only thing that was a little bothersome was the loud air conditioning, but we figured out that if you turn the unit on 'fan only' the air is almost as cold and a lot quieter, so it wasn't a big deal.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary two night stay at Harding House during the launch of their Babymoon Special for an editorial feature on Eco-Babyz.

I would not stay here again. Bed was hard as a rock, and no secure luggage place. I travel a lot, and am taking this off my list for Boston cambridge

Dear Guest,
I am so sorry you did not find the bed to your liking. If we had known about this at the time of your stay we could have tried to get you in a different room, perhaps the room the previous reviewer mentioned would have been more to your liking. We do our best to review guest comment cards and take action where rooms need improvement, however without more information on which room you were in we are unable to fix the situation. Please feel free to email me directly with any other feedback or at the very least your name so we can review the room for further improvements.
In regards to luggage storage, we do have luggage storage if you arrive before your room is ready or need to store it after check out. If you have something more valuable we are more then happy to hold it for you behind the desk. If you would feel more comfortable with your luggage out of other guests sight we would be more then happy to store it in my office. All of us are happy to work with you on making your stay more enjoyable and relaxing however we are unable to help if we are unaware of an issue.

Sincerely,
Briana Pearson

“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2011

This is the first time I feel misled by Tripadvisor. In spite of generally good reviews, I was amazed at how unimpressed I was by our visit. When we arrived we were greeted by a young woman at the desk who was either hostile or incompetent or both. Having just arrived after a 7 hour drive I asked what would be a good place nearby to take little kids for a quick dinner. After a long pause, she said she couldn't really think of any. When I persisted she said she really had no idea and so I asked to look through a guide (it is worth that noting that the B&B is close to many good restaurants some of which are excellent for children!). We also heard her reprimanding other guests for minor transgressions of minor house rules (one woman who had been there for weeks had dared to enter the (empty) kitchen to get some water from the faucet.

As for our actual stay, the room was a decent size, but the bed was AWFUL. Perhaps some people like sleeping on beanbags, but this was easily the WORST bed I have ever slept on. I ended up on the floor by the middle of the night.

On the plus side, the other staff were more pleasant and the breakfasts were very nice, but this place was an enormous disappointment. Suggestions: try not to greet guests with a hostile attitude, have suggestions on where to eat and splurge for new beds. Otherwise, I would suggest others STAY AWAY!

Dear David,

I am so sorry you did not enjoy your stay here at Harding House. As you may have read generally our staff gets positive reviews so I was very disheartened to read about your experience. I have printed your review and will not only speak with the young woman who checked you in, but also use the review as an example to which we can all learn and grow. Most of our staff grew up in the Boston/Cambridge area and have their favorite places, a couple have not and need more knowledge of where to recommend. I am a parent myself as well as a long time resident of Cambridge and wish very much I could have been here to help navigate the dinner decision.

On the topic of a guest in the kitchen, unfortunately for everyone's health and safety, guests do not have access to our kitchen area. However I do agree that there is better way to convey to a guest that these are our house rules. We are a large enough business that there are rules that apply concerning who can be in certain areas, the kitchen is for employees only. We do provide a water bubbler with filtered water for guests to use 24 hours a day as well as sink in the guest "powder room" on the first floor.

As for the mattress, I have done a little research into which room you stayed in and found that this is in fact one of our newest mattresses. I suppose one could argue that it is "too soft" with its extra thickness and luxury pillow top but this would be personal preference. We actually have a number of very particular repeat guests who request this room specifically because of the mattress. Had we known about your discomfort sleeping we could have possibly switched your room or found a different solution for your 3-night stay.

I hope that if your future travels bring you back to Cambridge you will consider Harding House, if only to see that we appreciate your feedback and your concerns are taken very seriously.

Sincerely,
Briana Pearson
