“Great place for a walk”

I've lived near Boston my whole life and only finally visited for the first time in November. I was really impressed with how beautiful it is. I didn't go looking for famous burials, although there are many. Instead just enjoyed a walk through the grounds. I particularly liked the tower and its view of Boston and a hilly area leading there that felt like being in the woods.

“Terrible Grounds Condition”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2006

I was shocked to see how lousily kept up the place has become. There were lots of messy/trashy areas where it looks like the rats have infested the place. I think whoever is responsible for maintaining the grounds should be dismissed or at the very least reprimanded and demoted! Someone has dropped the ball on keeping this a friendly and pretty place to visit while journeying through Boston.

“thanks to the mt auburn security”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2006

i think what u fail to understand is that many local boston families still have loved ones at mt auburn. this past fall may family who has been in boston since the late 1800's, burried my grandmother next to her husband. there were so many people walking around. it felt very un comfortable when they stoped to stare at my grieving family. that being said it is a beautiful and special place that i think everyone should visit. there is a definite need for security at mt auburn, and i am very thankful for them.

“Cemetery Security will make you feel like a criminal”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2004

I visited this cemetery once and was constantly harrassed by a plain clothes guard over the course of the hour I spent there. I was followed the entire time by a man in a suit and dark glasses who radioed my movements in to their security center-- sometimes driving after me in his car, sometimes hiding behind hedges to observe me. I do not know what threat they thought I posed, but they made sure I was very uncomfortable and completely unable to enjoy the sites in an otherwise very nice cemetery. This was the most surreal and bizarre experience I have ever had visiting a cemetery, and I hope never to repeat it!

My daughter and I spent several hours in this cemetery and found it beautiful and serene. The added attraction was the history of the spot and the plant specimens. It is truly a wonderful place and we hope to return.
