We were staying in Las Vegas for a long weekend and didn't want to gamble that much so we decided to look for nearby adventures. Although my husband isn't a lover of kayaking, he even loved this trip down the Colorado River. We were picked up at our hotel, driven to the river right below the Hoover dam. Everything was efficient and on time. We were back in the city and showered and ready to roll by six thirty (after a short nap)!
The kayaking was amazing. We typically kayak a lake and the river does have a current but no rapids that we saw. I was a little nervous but got comfortable quickly. Our guide, Ashely, was great! So patient and a kind instructor. We hiked and saw so many great pools and springs, amazing views. The lunch was great. The kayaks were in great condition - perfectly clean and no leaks. It was such a majestic river and canyon. The water is so clear you can see a long way to the bottom.
Our group was small - just six of us and we all had so much fun together. My husband and I are in our 40's and this was no problem (even with his bad knees). One couple did a tandem ride and they were probably in the early sixty range and they seemed comfortable. Ashley said the current was really fast and the water was higher than normal so we had a nice swift ride and coasted a good percent of the ride. I originally considered an un-guided trip but I'd recommend that you use the guide - the trails to the hot springs would be impossible to find. They also have great information about the river and the history of the dam and the whole area.
Wear sythethic fabrics that dry quickly - you'll be wet up to your knees getting in and out of the kayak. We brought a backpack with dry gear. Wear water socks or a river shoe that stones cannot get in...one guy had pebbles in his river sandles when we went hiking the hills and crevices and it was really hurting him. It was 68 and breezy from the north on the day we went and felt very warm because the wind was blocked a good part of the trip.
The crew was very accomdating and altered the tour as needed. This is a definate must do! I rank this in the top 20 great experiences of my life with the spectacular scenery and great operation. Thanks Desert Adventures!
