“Overpriced and overrated. Don't go there”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

This is a 3 star hotel trading on its location, which is 5 star. Our room was small and stuffy. Too many flounces and not enough of a working aircon to make much difference. I resorted to wet towels in the middle of the night. Only two of the five lights worked in our room, one bedside and one main ceiling. Our bathroom was back to back with next doors, and I know more about that guest's bodily functions than I need to. The attached restaurant is very pricey, and they sniff at you if you order the cheaper things on the menu. If you want to eat more economically, you have to walk back to Ston (about a 20 min walk) We stayed one night instead of three (bed and breakfast 954 kn or 138 euro) and I now see my credit card has been charged £83.07, a further 690 kn, presumably a cancellation fee which was not mentioned when we checked out. Just go to the Villa Giardino on Brac instead and get great service for less money.

“Lovely setting, very dear food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2009

The little fishing village of Mali Ston is lovely- well worth a night or two although there is nothing there apart from the hotel and the fish restaurants that the village is celebrated for.

The hotel is charming with nice antiques and our room had a superb view. Small though and pricey. The restaurants were a bit formal to me (and to be honest I don't eat shellfish and oysters are the speciality) I had some very basic pasta in a tomato sauce and it was nearly £15 at lunchtime.

The fresh fish did look good though but maybe this is a place for a splurge.

“Tranquil and relaxing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2009

We stayed in the Hotel Ostrea for two nights and it was the highlight of our trip in Croatia for a number of reasons - our beautiful room, the crystal clear water we swam in, the peace and quiet, and the wonderful restaurants beside the hotel.
Mali Ston is a tiny quiet village, with a couple of famed restaurants, beside the water. The hotel is a small quaint building, nicely furnished with paintings. I did not find the staff overly friendly but this was my experience in Croatia, in general, and it wasn't a problem for us.
Our room was small but beautiful, with three windows overlooking the town and the water. It was wonderful to wake in the mornings and open the shutters to reveal the blue sky and boats bobbing on the water below.
The bathroom was wall appointed and spotless. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of really fresh fruit, juice, croissants, coffee, ham, cheeses etc. served outside on a lovely covered terrace.
There is lots to do in the vicinity of the town (winery visits, walking the walls, trip to Korcula island etc). The location is perfect as a stop on a Dubrovnik - Peljesac peninsula trip (also close to Mostar which we drove to from here in an hour and a half).
For us it was a magical stay, and I would recommend this town and hotel to anyone looking to relax and unwind, in a tranquil, quiet setting.

“great little family run hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2008

We decided to spend some time in the wine region of Ston in Croatia and came across this 3 star family run hotel right on the water's edge. Our travel agent didn't know the hotel as Ston is not exactly a tourist destination, but after looking at pictures on the internet, we decided to take a chance on this sleepy little town. We are so glad we did.

It was a little hard to actually find, but it is right on the water, next to the 2 main restaurants in town, with a covered parking/storage area in between (which hid the sign).

One enters the hotel by climbing a flight of stairs (the ground floor has the "breakfast-only" restaurant for guests. Once inside, we were properly greated by the staff, who also answered our questions and gave us our key (they do speak English). Our room was 2 floors up, with no elevator. No problem, but if you can't carry your suitcases up, you wouldn't be happy.

The room was a decent size, with a king size bed, desk, bathroom and amoire. It also had 2 windows with provides a nice cross ventilation. One window had a beautify view of the Adriatic Sea. The bed was comfortable, and the best part was that the room had kleenex and wash cloths (2 things missing in even 5 star hotels in Croatia). Everything was very clean. And, they had free wireless internet!

While the room had air conditioning, we couldn't figure out how to get the cold air to work (the only issue we had with the hotel other than the difficulty in finding it). Still, with the cool sea breeze in the evening, it wasn't needed.

Breakfast was the standard Croatian hotel standard of a "help yourself" meat, cheese, yogurt, fruit and a strudel. But they had someone to bring you coffee and tea. We ate outside with a great breeze and view.

The family also has a wonderful seafood restaurant (Mlinica)next door that we ended up eating at twice. It was so much better than the more acclaimed restaurant next door (Bota something).

We're very particular about hotels and this one is a winner. Plus, the "town" is so beautiful and peaceful, we were very glad that we spent the night here.

“A night by the oysters”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2008

Delightful small hotel on a small bay. . .restaurant had great seafood. . . .. rooms were certainly adequate albeit on the small size.

Wifi did not work but you could use the computer at the front desk. My computer is very good at finding a signal and even though advertised it never worked even after a nice waiter came over from the restaurant and got his laptop to link--this needs the attention of someone who knows about computers.

Overall a nice experience. .
