My wife was a bit nervous about out of the way desert hotels. This was an absolute delight for her. Despite the dusty appearance, 29 Palms has artwork and a couple of good restaurants and a lot of Marines and families, mixed with leftover hippies. They are all trying to make it work. This hotel is well run, clean, full of friendly and competent locals who ALL smile and say "hello" in the halls.
The front desk was helpful and knew where everything was in town. The breakfast is billed as "continental" but had hot eggs, sausage and a waffle machine, in addition to fruit, cereals, juices and baked goods.
The room was a small suite with a king bed, sofa, stuffed chairs and both hard wired and wireless internet axis (free.) Decor was modern and everything was functional. It is not an urbane, elegant hotel, but it is most certainly a nice place to stay if you are visiting Joshua Tree national park or have dealings with a Marine on the base. My wife was very happy.
